Black Dog or Mules??????
« on: October 17, 2006, 11:47:38 AM »
hey, im looking at buying some bareknuckles humbuckers for my new gibson les paul classic and im terribly stuck on the choice between the mule or black dog. I play through a vox ac30 (w/ a keeley java boost treble booster) and an engl screamer 50 combo. I love rock, both new and old. I love jimmy pages tone, by far my favourite so initially i thought the black dogs would be the definate right choice. But im really wondering how the alnico 5 magnets will sound through my amps (maybe a bit too edgy), so i leant towards maybe mules but also worried these wouldnt have enough grunt to drive my cranked ac30 into breakup. If anyone could help out on any advice on how each would sound or what they would recommend i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Mules are very similar to Black Dogs from what I can gather.  The Black Dogs are a touch hotter with more emphasis on the lower mids.  The Mules are more mid to higher mid focussed.

Hey

Im a jimmy page fan and i seem to get the opinion that the blackdog bridge and the mule neck is the jimmy page combo as the BD has more output and a bit more bite behind it, and the mules give detailed bass and nice clean tones (in my opinion).

Have you emailed Tim (BKPs maker) and asked him for his opinion? he's very helpful and he knows more than anyone about what pickups would be best...

Yep Carls suggestions is probably the best

I would recommend a black or cream uncovered Bridge pickup and a Nickel Covered Neck Pickup to the nail Pages pickup combo look  :)

Nice to see yet another Led Zeppelin fan on the forum  :D
