Recommend me some Bareknuckles...
« on: October 30, 2006, 06:28:22 PM »
Hey guys and gals,

Considering a pickup switch, just wondering if you could make some suggestions.

Ok, so here's the background:

-My Guitar: Schecter S-1 Elite in Grey Mist.
-Current Pickups: Stock Duncan Designed HB101's.
-My amp: None at the moment; I'm being bought a new amp for my birthday in six months time, and I sold my cr@ppy Marshall solid-state for pickup money. So currently I'm just using my POD.
-I Play: Punk, hardcore, metalcore, and metal.
-I Need: A bridge and neck humbucker set.

And here's my requirements:

Bridge Humbucker:
- High output.
- Strong bass/good bass definition/preferably a bass-based pickup.
- Clarity and definition.
- Good cleans not so necessary, I usually use the neck for cleans.
- Not necessarily strong or dominant mid/high-range, but they must still be nice sounding.

Neck Humbucker:
- Output not so much of an issue; obviously a nice, smooth distortion sound is nice, but I don't need insane gain.
- This is the pickup I will use for my cleans; it needs to be smooth, rounded sounding.
- Good bass response, but with sparkly mid/highs to round out the tone.
- Clarity, no muddiness.

Thanks guys, fire away with suggestions! All help greatly appreciated.[/b]

Nick, you need to start being specific as to what a "Custom Warpig" entails...obviously those of us who've been here a while know that it's a Warpig with ceramic magnet, but people who haven't been around as long know what to expect if they ask for a custom pig

I checked out some clips, and the Warpig sounds a bit too saturated for my-liking...

From what I've listened to I liked the Abraxas and the Holydiver... They've got more of a vintage vibe but still with gain... Which would you recommend of the two?

Holydiver - but only 'cause I've got one

But seriously, for hardcore and metal, the Abraxas is probably a little underpowered...

Miracle Man set..

Great bridge pickup and the neck cleans are fantastic, totally ace setup.

I agree, the Abraxas probably doesn't have the power you might want for metal.  Also, some people think Alnico 4 pickups get a little muddy with high gain.

The Holy Diver is a great pickup - my favourite BKP - & despite the name is capable of some serious brutality   Also, the HD neck in a calibrated set is very clear & does nice cleans (check out my clean HD clip in the players forum).

However:

You've almost exactly described the Miracle man here.  The Miracle Man neck in a calibrated set would probably meet most of your neck needs too, or perhaps the Cold Sweat neck (quite a few people have a MM/CS combination).
