You have to be in a job ATLEAST 2 years before you have to give a months notice to quit. Upto 2 years service, it's 1 weeks notice.

I had ALOT of cr@p myself with my last employer, and the above info is what the Citizens Advice Bureau told me.

Can you provide a written reference?

jobs have different notice periods, mine is a month, i've been there 2 and a bit years.

a new job which i've just got (dont know if i will take it..) has 1 week notice for the probationary period of 3months, after that its a month.

Your employer can suspend you instead of you actually working your notice, usually with pay! It depends on your contract really.

I work in finance and theres some points in the contract about not working for another financial company within 10miles of the head office, or about trying to entice staff\customers away or leaking procedures etc to the competition but i think most of those points are due to law and regulations in that sector... so i wouldnt want to mess with those (some harsh fines & penalties for stuff like that..)

Put it this way:

I worked for Game for 3 days and left, and i've never disclosed that on a CV to any employers, i also worked in Clarks for a week, then walked, and have never disclosed that either!

My mum walked out of a job after 3 weeks, and straight into another one, they just opted not to give her a reference and the new employers werent bothered.

:D

i spose they COULD enforce the contract, or threaten too, but they probably wont due to MONEY and TIME, which is in addition to getting a replacement for you etc etc.. these are 2 things companies dont like wasting.... what they gonna do, MAKE you work for them? :P

quiting the job you hate is one of the best feelings.  I worked in a clothing warehouse for 3 months and after the 2nd or 3rd week i hated it. But i stayed on to see if i could handle it. But as soon as January hit, i had to leave. My supervisors, co workers and the overall warehouse system was terrible, no one was good enough with their job, they only ever made if worse.

So i left on the last day of January, had a month of unemployment (holiday  8) ) and then got the job i have now.

I'll be leaving this job soon too because i just can't find the time to play with a band and i hate that.

A few years ago I was pretty skint and took a part time job in a local factory-putting cd cases together-mind numbing stuff. It was 8 hours of sheer misery and how on earth people who do it full time cope I cannot imagine. I tried to streamline the production processes by organising the guys on my table-hardly any of them could speak English but they got the idea. The "supervisor" saw it and stopped it  and she was very rude to me.I told her what I thought of her and walked out.

I know how ya feelin' mate. I've had jobs I wanted to quit within a day. Waking up in the moring, have a cup of coffee and a cigarette, throw up a couple of times and off to that shitety job.

For a while now I had something steady that was actually a job I enjoyed doing. After a while, the work load doubled and tripled maybe even more. A part of this work has to be done before a certain time wich has become almost impossible. After that it takes more time than it should so I was always home late. There's lots of lifting involved too. All of that sh!t gave me a back problem. So now I'm home with a bad back. I can't lift anything heavy, I can hardly pick anything off the floor and I can't drive more than 20 minutes.

On top of that, I probably won't get paid.

Well what goes around comes around I guess, I got offered my old job back which was decent so I'm happy!

I think its majorly $%&#ed up how some smaller companies get, I mean the politics, its just crazy! I like the leave work at work policy thing which I try to live by. I was so worried about leaving that job after only 4 months like it was gonna mess me up big time, but its great to see afterwards how insignificant it actually is.

Peace
