7 string choices
« on: November 14, 2006, 03:37:52 PM »
I recently came into possession of two Ibanez S7420s, these are 7 string mahogony body, maple neck Ibanez S (thin body) guitars.

My style of playing is a sort of mix from heavy distorted chugging riffs to fast overdriven solos. So I'm looking for a neck pickup that will give me the power for the riffage, but a neck pickup that's hot enough for some fancy soloing (and ofcourse switch to the bridge when I need that extra power or to cut through).

I was first considering a ceramic 'pig for the bridge and a nail bomb for the bridge, but after reading a little more here on the forums I'm thinking that might be a little 'too much' power. Any opinions on this combination?

If I were looking for pickups that'd give me a nice clear sound when I'm playing fast, what would you recommend? (We're talking Petrucci/Satriani kinda sound, and a little Vai style tremelo abuse).

Another thing I'm wondering is how the high output pups will sound in these Ss with them being mahogany bodied? I've read that they sound 'better' in basswood..

If anyone here has 7 string BKPs I'd love to hear what you think of them, and what sets you have (and in what positions), for your style of playing.. I'm not going to buy any till I've completely made my mind up what I need.

Thanks in advance for any help..

Eric

First since you have two S7420s I hate you.

All kidding aside, I'd reccomend and Nailbomb bridge and a Cold Sweat Neck. Both should have the power you want and are clear enough to not get muddy in the mahogany.  Other options for the bridge might be the Painkiller, Cold Sweat  and Holy Diver. Neck options I'd think the VH2 and Holy Diver would work as well.

We make all of our humbuckers in 7 string versions-current favs are Nailbombs, Warpigs and Miracle Man with the Cold Sweat nearly always going in the neck slot.

Thanks, I was starting to think of a Nailbomb/Miracle Man in the bridge and Cold Sweat in the neck after reading all (well, alot) of the posts in here. I think I might try and Miracle Man in my S (as I love the sample with the Wylde style harmonics), and a Nailbomb in my brother's (got him it for christmas)

I think the Painkiller would be a pretty cool pickup for a 7 string (i plan to have one fitted to mine soon). The tight bass responce and balanced frequencies would really suit 7 string guitars well.
