Ok, I think I know what I want...

For my SG, I think I'd like a pair of humbucker-sized Pig-90s.
But what to put in my MIJ Strat, I don't know.
[I'm into stuff like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Rainbow, that kind of thing.]
Any advice will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

What routing do you have on yer strat, ie swimming pool or individual cavities- as obviously this dictates whether you could squeeze a humbucker in there for the bridge for a HSS configuration?

As DeanS said, it depends on what your pickup options are for the Strat.

Nice name, Charon. One of my favourite tunes!!

Ah. That's a good question. How do I find out? [Or maybe that should be, what do I have to take off? :) ]
If it helps, it appears to be a Standard 22 from 1984-1987...

simply take off the pickguard and see if there's room for a humbucker under there, or if it's routed only for a single coil

Ha ha... Simply... I wish I'd known that the pups were spring loaded, then I wouldn't have fully unscrewed one of them. (D'oh!)

Anyway, it's seperate holes, so it looks like all single coils.
I've got to take it to be seen to anyway (earthing problem, switch starting to get iffy) so whether that makes any difference or not, I don't know. (I doubt it, somehow)
There was some rust on one of the screws holding the pickguard on... dunno if that relates to anything or not...

Assuming you want to stick with single coils (and not rout big humbucker-shaped hole in your Strat), my gut instinct would then be an Irish Tour set for you. :)

Thanks, folks.
What about Sinners, btw? Are they just bridge pickups? Are they like Warpigs (ie, more aggressive than you might expect) ?
Maybe a Sinner in the bridge and a coupla Irish Tours?

Well, I must confess that I don't know a lot about the Sinners or about whether people have had as much success mixing and matching single coils as some people have had with humbuckers.

Your list of influential bands/tones -- Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Rainbow -- are all fairly "classic" or "classic metal" bands, and I thought the Irish Tours would suit that vibe quite well.  Likewise, my feeling is that the Sinners, maybe even the Trilogy Suites (but maybe not!), could be hotter than you want.

But people who know their single coil sets better than I (I've listen to bunches of clips, but I'm a 'bucker player, and haven't much experience with playing strats of any description) can probably steer you better (as, of course, can Tim!).

Thanks, I only wondered because Sinners are named after a Judas Priest song, and seemed perhaps to be an option. [Always good to have options... :)] Then again Warpigs are named after a Black Sabbath song, and are considered a bit OTT...
I'll have a listen to the samples and have a bit of a think...
