just re assembling my ibanez. the neck seems a little loose in the body. i noticed it when i took it apart. the screws tighten up ok and the gap is equal on both sides. is this ok i thought it was sposed to be tight in the body?

Tight is best but its not always perfect on most guitars. The most important area is the bottom of the neck pocket where the screws go through and contact the bottom of the neck. You ideally want perfect contact on this bit. The sides just provide a little extra support.

At the end of the day, as long as you cant move it easily when you bolt it back together it should be ok.

And why are you reassembling it - if you have done any finishing work that could have affected the fit of the neck

i took it apart to paint the body and the body is finished. im pretty sure i havent done anything to alter the fit as i noticed it when i took it apart. its doesnt move when bolted up. i

ve been lookin on the net but cant find much info on the subject! i didnt think anyone knew!

I have an Ibanez that has a neck pocket thats been cut too wide so it has a gap on the lower cutaway side, never had any problems with it but after disassembling I had top be careful to get it aligned correctly.
I have another Ibanez which is a perfect fit and no room for movement.

ive been careful and made sure its aligned the best i can get it. i put a pick on each side to keep it square.

i didnt paint the neck cavity or anything. i just masked it up and left it alone and done the rest!!

You can glue vaneers around the neck pocket if you wish, but like said above, if it's all lined up and bolted down tight then it's not as big an issue.

Personally, I'd probably stick the vaneers in, but that's because I'm pedantic sod. Actually, I probably put it on my list of things to do, but I'd never get round to it. Pedantic and lazy, a frustrating combination

Veneers = thin slivers of wood.
a veneer can come in a sheet maybe 1mm thick and anywhere up to 2 foot wide and 14 feet long

I've just saved a cheapo SG copy from a fate worse than death so that I can practice my refinishing. It's got a dodgy neck pocket (the guitar cost £50 new, so I'm not suprised) so I'm going to glue some vaneers in and go from there. Once I've done it, I'll post how it went and what I did if you want.

Decided on a material finish so I can use practically any thin material or a poster etc. Unfortunetly I've only got gold hardware (can't afford to buy anymore) so after asking a mate what went well with gold, he thought a minute and came up with......

......."Burberry". So watch this space for a Burberry SG. Unless I have a better idea before then anyway.
