Need a bridge humbucker for my all-mahogany G&L Legacy
« on: December 11, 2006, 01:09:04 AM »
Nothing too hot, as my Guytron already has a ton of gain.  I just need something tighter and glassier than the JB that's in there already.  Here's a pic of the guitar so you have an idea of what it'd be going in...

This is a VERY fat and warm sounding guitar, which I love, but it sucks for palm-muted rhythm on this amp (which is a bit on the warm vintage side of overdrive itself, but can be more modern if I want it to).  I need something tighter, articulate, but still warm, without a brittle high-end.  Output similar to the J.B., not sure if I really need any more since I'd like to play clean as well.

My styles of music range from death-metal to prog-rock and jazz if that helps any.  I'm fairly happy with the neck pickup right now (Duncan '59), but I might try a BK there if I like whatever I get for the bridge (this would be my first BK pickup).

Thanks for the help :D

I would say a Nailbomb, very vesatile pickup and is not that powerfull for a high gain pickup. Cleans are great, can go from ragin death metal to jazz stuff just like you want.

That's what I'm leaning towards (the sticky clips of it certainly help :D) at the moment...

+1 for the Nailbomb. I have one in the bridge of my Les Paul and I love it, very versatile though I mostly play heavy/thrash metal on it

i think the nailbomb is the one to go for too. Mine is in a mahogany Ibanez and it sounds like a beast 8) however- you said that you really wanted a tight sound, and that the nailbomb isn't really. It's more loose and agressive, whereas the miracle man is tighter... i don't know your thoughts on ceramic pups aswell, and obviously the clean won't be as good. (unless you have a particular liking for ceramic clean...)

Well, I guess I should have specified "tighter", not necessarily "tightest".  I'd like tighter and more even than the J.B. in there now (which, sonically speaking, is a bit all over the place).  Something a bit more controlled and Hi-Fi sounding (the term "glassy" comes to mind), if you will, while still being agressive enough for metal.  Normally I wouldn't want it to be super-tight, but with this amp, the J.B. in this particular guitar is pretty muddy.

To contrast, I have mahogany/maple ASAT with a Tom Anderson H3 that is clearer and tighter, but a tad on the sterile side since that pickup attenuates a lot of high-end.  I also have a Rio Grande BBQ in my Agile Les Paul that is very scooped sounding, but gets the tightest metal sound out of all my guitars despite being the lowest output (around 13k).  Unfortunately, metal is all that guitar is really good for; I'd like a pickup with more versatility :)

I think the Rebel Yell might be worth considering - it has a decent amount of power but not in the MM/PK league.

Definitely tighter and more even than a JB.  I wouldn't call it "glassy", but it has plenty of punch and presence.  And it cleans up nicely too, unlike a JB.  Works well in mahogany too.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM
