HSH suggestions for Vai and Satriani
« on: March 26, 2007, 10:18:02 PM »
Hi there,
First non lurking visit, I love this sight, some of you guys are mean
guitarists.

I am looking for a suggestion for an HSH combination for an Ibanez Jem replica which I am building for my son. I have done some trawling but like to post my own questions.

I want to approximate the sound of Vai and Satriani in shred and more mellow mood, in the same guitar. So therefore probably need a different type of humbucker in the neck and bridge one for Satch and one for steve Vai, and I have no idea about the single coil.  I will wire with a push pull pot so both humbuckers can work together as well. I know this is asking a lot and the magic is in the fingers, but have a go. I have also posed this conundrum direct to Tim, it will be interesting to see if there is a concensus.

Unfortunately due to financial constraints and bedroom size, my son is having to make do with multi effects amp modelling units plus cry baby and digital delay, and my keyboard recording set up or his Roland micro cube
I look forward to your response and hopefully links to sound files.

Wow, you're a cool dad!

It really depends on what era of Satch you're talking about, as his tone has changed a LOT over the years.

In the most general sense, however, I would use a Miracle Man (bridge), Trilogy Suite (middle) and Abraxis (neck).

Hi, thanks for the cool bit, I'm sure you must have meant a soft touch, made him a 5 string electric violin too. However,Satch. My sons fav era is def The Surfin with the alien, satch Boogie, Always... Rubina type era.
A Santana pickup never thought about that, he does like Carlos's sound from Caravanserai and Europa but there again, He also loves parisienne walkways, and Malmsteens guitar suite !!!!, and its 11 o'clock and he has been learning little Wing on his strat for nearly 3 hours. He's 13 by the way

Wish my dad was as much into Guitar as I am :p

Deffo agree on Surfing With the Alien as Satch's best era, and I think you can trust TO's supreme judgement, he's an authority on these boards ;)
