MM vs Nailbomb for Thrash
« Reply #15 on: December 21, 2006, 11:27:52 AM »
I have MM in both my thru neck guitars (Fernandes Steeler&Chravel 675) they sound perfect for thrash.  I also have a Nailbomb in my USA Warlock which again in perfect thrash alot of it is down to what you run it through.  I would say either one will do the job well, it's down to what's gonna make make you grab your nuts and sream hell fire.....If you see what I mean.

I think a MM will do the Metallica thing well, but listening to some Testament today I reckon a Nailbomb would do that kind of sound even better than the original, Slayer type sounds are also quite easy with a NB but these are quite different to Metallica's tone.

Listen to the new Exodus and Destruction

http://www.destruction.de/index.php?s_id=7&lang=en - Listen to anything

http://www.exodusattack.com/ - Listen to 'Raze' (left hand side)

Listen to some of those clips, that is the heavy sound i want.
Destruction use EMG's & Exodus use Duncan Custom in the studio.

the thing is...

Nailbomb & Miracle Man both kick ass for Thrash Metal.

it just depends on what sound you are after  :?...

if you like originality & more dynamics in your tone I'd choose the Nailbomb.

the Miracle Man sounds like something you have always heard but PIMPED UP by BKP. (actually VERY pimped up   )

This is the very point of BKP, and the hardest part. As i did, i went for the ones Tim recommended me. Not only does he produce them, but he has a basic understanding for what genre the pickups where made for. Whatever BKP you choose, you will be more than pleased. Just a tad more particular.

Anyways, your asking us, right? So heres the deal:

The Nailbomb contains a great old school thrash tone, like Megadeth and Testament. A more open tone compared to the Miracle Man, thats at least my point of view.

The Miracle Man on the other hand, is one of the "modern" pickups BKP has to offer. Think metallica: Hi-Gain ceramics. The more modern bands as well, but the newer bands contain too many other genres to be classified as pure thrash.

Conclusion: I love the Miracle Man, because now im more into the heavy, tight and POWERFULL guitar tone. But i still use the Nailbomb when i need the classic thrash feel that i have fallen in love with.
Miracle Man is my personal favorite, but for you... NAILBOMB. Just listen to the freaking name!

My only concern regarding the Nailbomb is that Joe's guitar is an Explorer, how will it sound in all that Mahogany? It may need the extra push of the MM to really shine.

It's so close really, I would say I find when I'm tracking guitars, and I play mainly thrash from the clean technical tones of the US acts to the agressive tones of the European bands, that I layer using both the Nailbomb and MM pu's to get a great full tone.

As I explained earlier both will do the job very well, however I would lean towards a Nailbomb for all out aggression.

The MM is still an agressive pu but it is a more versitile pu and is my fav having converted to them EMG's which I got plain bored of.

Alot of the tone comes from what you are running it through a great sounding amp will help you along the way to.

Best of luck

I think i'll send a message to the almighty Tim in the next few days and see what he thinks. I think he is probably the best person to ask because i'm getting so many mixed opinions here

MM
NB
C WP
PK

ALL heavy pups with plenty of output!

Pick one and be your OWN player, NOT a copy of someone already famous ;)

P.S. visit ANY pro musician and see their collection of guitars and equipment. I gaurantee it's VAST. What I mean is what you hear on a recording is A. usually alot to do with production, B. usually contains way more than 1 axe/pup set and C. is almost impossible to replicate.

Go on be an individual Joe, ya know ya wanna be ;)

It's not really about what will sound heavy anymore because i understand all of them will, mainly now it's how well they will work in an all mahogany explorer.

the C Warpig is too bassy (also more expensive!)
Painkiller is british voiced, i will get one for the strat eventually.

It's just between the NB and MM. It's really tight, though i think i'm going towards the MM since i have decided for a Cold Sweat in the neck.

By the way, has anyone got an overwound NB or ceramic NB and do you think any of those would work.
