Distorted sounds from a new BlackDog? Help!
« on: January 05, 2007, 03:10:56 PM »
Hello All

I had a local guitar tech install a new BlackDog into the bridge of my geetar and paid good money for him to do so.

However, there is a problem.

Once plugged into my amp the guitar plays clear & fine for around 5 minutes.
After that, notes develop a distorted, fuzzy after-note.  This occurs after the note has rang, sort of a fuzzy afterthought.  It really is bizarre as it does take a length of time before it develops.

It's definitely not fret buzz brought on by the height of the pickup and the neck pickup I had him install at the same time (a Mississippi Queen) works fine, so I guess he can solder.

I took the guitar back to the tech this morning who is going to look it over and try & fix it.  Though he did say it's probably a "component" problem, which makes me think he's going to blaim the BlackDog.
I have no experience of wiring so I don't know if he's done a good job or not.  Before I took it in this morning I did take a photo.  I'll try and attach it to this post to see what you think...  It's in an SG so it should be wired for the pups to work in parallel.

Other than that, does anyone have any ideas to what the problem might be?
Thanks alot!

If the problem occurs after 5 minutes, it doesn't sound like the pickup. Try playing through another amp. Pickups usually either work or they don't. Hope you get it sorted!

Hard to tell from that pic how the hell it's wired up!

Sounds very strange to me, but very similar to a 'wolf note' that affects Starts when the pickups are too close to the strings.  I would guess that's your problem - bridge pickup too high.

I've played it through several amps and guitar cables and plugged into my PC.
It even developed the distortion on the tech's amp in his workshop (thankfully!)

I'm hoping it's just dodgy soldering....

I thought that the pup might be too high so I screwed it right down to the body and it the damn fuzz was still there.

Thanks for you advice though!

Could be a dry solder joint.

Hi Y'all,

I got my SG back from the tech today and the fuzzy distortion is no more!
He said the volume pot needed cleaning out.
Dunno what that involves but it seems to have worked.

Cheers

BadMonkey, changing the subject a little, but now that your dodgy pot is sorted out how does the Black Dog sound in your SG?

I remember we had a thread a few weeks back about whether it would sound bassy.  Was that the case, or is it nice and bright/tight/punchy?  I'm still trying to decide if I should buy one.

To my ears it sounds great!
I've only played it through my Epi Valve Jr at the moment, but it's not overtly bassy.  I'll be playing my Laney VC30-212 midweek (too big & loud to keep at home..) so will have the final verdict then, but thus far I'm very happy with my purchase

I saw that thread(s) about putting the BD in a mahogany guitar when I was about to order, so I mailed Tim whether I should go for the RiffRaff instead.  He said he'd fit a BD in an SG before & it sounded great, so I went ahead.
If I have time this week I'll try & post some samples on the Players board.  Don't expect anything fancy though as I aint that great an axeman.

Cool stuff my simian pal. I too have a Laney VC30 only mine is the 2 x 10.I boughtmyself a loop to take the f/x out of the chain so that at least for part of a gig, I could get that great VC tone. I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts after you have "given it some neck".

Look forward to it.  And never mind the quality, I'm sure it'll be better than anything I could do!

Thanks for the reply!
