A good overdrive pedal
« on: January 17, 2007, 12:53:56 PM »
OK, need some opinions folks.  I have a couple of neck thru's with MMs, ans a bolt on with Nailbomb.  I run these into a 5150 and Mode 4 angled cab.  I want to put an overdrive into the mixx too, can anyone suggest a good one, I've got about £150 to spend, so I;m hoping that will give me lots of options.

The style of music I play is heavy, Gothic Metal, but in a modern vein, so my tones cross into the death metal black metal arena.

Cheers

A) do you really want an overdrive pedal? For the styles you're saying, you want a distortion.
B) The 5150 has tons of power and a filthy drive channel, do you really need a pedal?
With those questions in mind, for that money something like a Keeley modded TS808 should be available, the new Mayer Voodoo Blues has a list price of £155, and there are various other boutique pedals at that mark.
If you want a distortion, then the Digitech distortion factory is well thought of, or you can go really high end and get the much lauded Damage control solid metal for £169

That was my first impression too - no metaller in their right mind should need a pedal to get good metal tones out of a 5150 head. Never. Ever.

If I were to recommend a pedal, it would be the Krank Distortus Maximus though.

Fair point guys, the 5150 delivers plenty of drive and distortion, my intention is to roll off some of the drive on amp and introduce another tone into the mix, try and vary the sound a bit.

Maybe you might be better off getting volume and EQ pedals

I know a lot of guys use a 5150 with the gain backed off, and an OD pedal. They say it tightens the tone.

My guess is a maxon od808 or od9 are worth a shot, as are the modded versions. I know they're used a lot for that kind of thing.

HBE power screamer is pretty nice too, and the black box electronics x-ray. Not sure how well they'd fare for boosting a high-gainer, I guess they're worth a shot though, they are very nice pedals...

Dave_mc is right, it does tighten the tone and stops the bass from being too flabby, keep the gain right down though: no one in their right mind would need to boost the gain levels on an amp like that. It's a trick a lot of more modern metal bands have taken from Andy Sneap.

If that's what he wants it for then the MXR Zakk Wylde is designed for exactly that.

Maxon OD808 is a great one for fine tuning the distortion

And it does it's job brilliantly.

Some git stole mine while I was packing up after a gig. The Devil. So i'm using a ts808 to do much the same job on my boogie just now.

Slightly off topic but does anyone use an OD or dist pedal with a modeller? I'm thinking of getting one to go with my PODXT, some guys on the line6 forum use additional stompboxes and they say it works well but they pretty much use boss and other mass market pedals (which I've nothing against) but I know that there are lots of guys here with boutique effect experience:)
But maybe the kind of person who uses a boutique pedal wouldn't use a modeller?

The clip I did in the Players section called "dirty irish" was done with a Pod 2.0, Keely DS-1 and Java Boost.
