Pinch Harmonics from Single Coils
« on: January 14, 2007, 09:58:00 PM »
Hi

I am a new user here and got interested in BKP while researching for new pickups for my strat.

I am not able to get pronounced pich harmonics from the bridge single coil. Current pikcups are all stock American series ones. Has anybody else experienced this? I understand that I might not be able to get the same response as say a DiMarzio Evolution but still I thought good pinch harmonics would not be difficult to obtain from a strat. I love this guitar, it plays very well but in a band setting I feel a little underpowered as the other guitarist in our band uses an Ibanez with DiMarzio Evolutions

If I were to change my bridge single coil, which one would you suggest for more power and especially pinch harmonics?

I currently play through a Boss GT 8 (Saving up dough for an Engl ;) )

Thanks in advance

When I was at ACM, Dave Kilminster (now playing for Roger Waters) used to get the sickest pinched harmonics from single coil guitars, so it can be done.

I get good ones from my Strat too, but I do have to pile on the gain to get it to really scream. I know a guy called Jim Clark who has Trilogy Suites in his Strat (I believe) and he always had a killer tone. He'd play a lick on the neck pickup, and as he hit the last note, he'd flip onto the bridge and nail a wide vibrato, and the guitar just wailed. So they get my vote.

Thanks JonnyScaramanga. I'll also do a quick setup check on my strat to see if there are any issues there becoz of which i cant pinch any...

And oh yes....strat neck pickup rules for solos (although mine are still stock) especially sweep picking (imo). As far as vibratos are concerned I am still struggling to play a marty friedman (megadeth days..) solo (hangar 18  )...hahaha. I'll try that trick..switching to bridge for vibrato.

Would triologies retain the strat charachter or are they too hot?

I don't have experience of Trilogies but from other posts, they do retain that Strat character-I think they clean up nicely when backing off the guitar volume. I cannot comment much in pinch harmonics as I tend to play clean/bluesy-maybe I should give it a go.

Sometimes you have to adjust the pickup height for the flipping-to-bridge trick to work. It's hard to describe but when you get it right and the guitar has the tone for it, it sounds amazing. You pick the note and then immediately flip to the bridge... hopefully you'll get a boost in level and upper harmonics that really makes it wail.

Jim used to play Stevie Ray stuff on his Strat and sound pretty authentic, as well as the Yngwie shite, so I'm guessing the Trilogy Suites are versatile enough.

check out the 'Uber sinner's' in the players section.  The bridge is wound to 23k!!!! the playing is great and the tone is out of this world, while still sounding great clean,  His playing sounded quiet Vai orientated with lots of harmonics and sweeps.  Its incredible to hear such a powerful sound from a single coil.

Might be a tad too much for u, but I just love having the idea of a 'sleeper'. bringing out a 'standard' looking strat, and then burning down the house with the first lick.  Im sure that anyone with an ounce of knowledge of guitars (and those who don't) wouldn't belive it.

EDIT:

here we go take a listen to this

Im sorry to be persistant...but I'm on a mission to build the most badass guitar of all time.

Thanks a ton,

Will a sinner at the bridge work well with stock pickups in middle and neck. I use neck and bridge only most of the time. If i need to replace the other two too, will a sinner work well with Irish tours?

trilogy cleans up awesomely.
the clean tone is imo pretty strat like, but it's some time since i had a real strat in my hands.
the pinch harmonics on my neck trilogy are easy to pull off, so on the bridge they should be even easier
