I had their sales catalogue last week and spotted this little beauty:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/dod_vx250v_bodeneffektpedal.htm

I bought two of them (one for a mate) which made it £27 each including delivery!  They arrived today and they sound great!  A very clear and transparent overdrive.  There's a little bit of the usual grainy fizziness at high gain levels (like all non-tube pedals) but nothing major.  Sounds good with 'buckers and singles.

Steal of the century - treat yourself!

Looks good. Very reasonable price too. If I hadn't just bought a set of Mules, I'd have one of those right now.

Maybe next week...

that deal caught my eye as well! frankly i'm very very tempted.

your post came along at just the right time!

the 250 reissue looks very nice in the yellow - but the YJM version is meant to have a more defined bass and a smoother top end. this may just be internet rumours. i hate signature stuff, and i'm not a YJM fan, plus the case of the YJM one doesn't look as retro:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/dod_fx_yjm_308_preamp_overdrive.htm

i'm after a simple transparent boost, with the chance to experiment with some diode clipping.

i'd rather get the yellow one if i can, but ultimately if the YJM one is more transparent, i'll go for that.

do you think the yellow has a harsh topend and undefined bass? how close do you think it comes to a 'clean boost'?

You could use it as a clean boost, although you won't get too much boost without a reasonable level of gain dialled in.  The two dials are interactive to a certain extent.  It's certainly very clear and doesn't colour the tone too much.  The top end is a bit fizzy when you crank the gain, it starts to sound a little bit like a fuzz pedal.

Why not buy one of each, and put the other on eBay if you don't like it?

I cant see either working as a clean boost - i use the 250 in front of my driven amp to give a "Bit more" but it doesn't have enough volume to work as a clean boost.

although with both dials at 3 o clock in front of a hot amp it sounds great!

Theres a nice easy mod for the 250/308 to make it into useable a clean boost, PM me i'll try to find a link for you.

there a similar mod for a  boss ds-1 which works way better tho'

if you can't decide, IMO the 250 is the sweeter sounding overdrive,
the 308 is very shrill and lacking in low end

Thomann have also got several other DOD pedals super cheap.  I ordered the 250 Overdrive and an FX75C Stereo Flanger, which will come to less than £50 delivered.

thanks alot for the feedback twinfan, axetogrind and stuckin93.

my amp (marshall 2204) certinally doesn't need any more shrill top end. although, the pedals are so cheap as twinfan says, i might as well try both, and sell one. good idea!

will PM you about those mods.

all the best
