New Humbucker ideas...
« on: January 24, 2007, 11:23:59 AM »
Hello there guys!

Right, just joined a new band (www.illusionmusic.com) and I'm thinking about replacing the bridge PAF Pro in my PGM.  The guitar is Maple fretboard and Basswood body.

Now the problem is, mycurrent  sound is a bit twangy (not too banjo-y) which for metal leads and rhythm, doesn't sound great-it's passable though.  I need a smoother sound for harmonies and killer leads but also some CRUNCH for a sick rhythm sound.

I'm thinking of going for a Painkiller for the NWOBHM sound but the Rebel Yell and the Miracle Man are calling - any suggestions for both rhythm and lead playing?

Me current set up is PGM>Morley Bad Horsie>Digitech Bad Monkey(on all the time, if someone has a better boost going for cheap then get in contact!)>Marshall TSL100H

Any ideas? (TO I'm looking at YOU! Your band plays sorta the same stuff)

You're using a Bad Monkey as a boost? What sort? A solo boost? If so, I'd just suggest an MXR 6-band EQ... two reasons, EQ's for solo boosts are great and Digitech pedals (apart from the Whammy) are a bit poo.

Early Bad Monkey are better than your standard pricey Ibanez TS9, so don't ditch Digitech like that please (i did AB comparison for that).
Even the latter models are good albeit a bit noisy.
A better one with the same vibe would be a Humphrey Audio Badder Monkey (modded BM, search eBay), very good reviews on HC.

I have the Bad Monkey on all the time to help thicken up my tone and give a wee bit of ZING! The amp has three channels so I use the LEAD channel for solos.

Any ideas for Humbuckers anyone?

I'd say either the Miracle Man or the Painkiller. Depends on how much you like midrange. Both are good for rhythm and lead. The Rebel Yell might be a little too mushy in a basswood guitar.

See I thought Miracle Man/Painkiller might be too sharp for a maple/basswood axe - thats why I was also thinking of RY/NB

Depending on what kind of distortion you are looking for, I would suggest the Nailbomb or the Miracle Man for more attack, the Holy Diver if you want a darker tone, or the Cold Sweat for a great overall shred tone.

My Painkiller set is in my MusicMan which is Basswood/Rosewood and sounds just dandy to me.

The Painkiller neck pup, which I think is GREAT, is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.
