Benefits of replacing tuners and bridge/tailpiece?
« on: January 30, 2007, 11:41:23 PM »
If I bought the high end stuff (tonepros bridge and a set of spurzel tuners), how would it improve my warlock?

Worth it?

the tone and sustain may improve a bit but the main bonus would be touning stability.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

The machineheads will not do much in my opinion.  There's lots of bull written about they help tuning stability.  They very rarely "slip", even cheap ones.

The TonePros bridge will increase the acoustic vibrance and sustain of the guitar.  At list it did on my SG anyway.

You should get a GraphTec nut too  ;)

Thanks for the info guys.

Nuts seem cheap. Would this one work?

I'm getting my bridge pickup replace, so I figure i'd get a little more work done.

Which kind of TonePros bridge would work on my axe?

That's the nut you want - check the measurements to make sure you get the right size.

Same with the bridge - check the measurements and order the correct size as there are metric/imperial types.  As to the model, read up the different specs and decide which one you like best  :D

Headstock designs with really splayed string patterns after the nut don't really lend themselves to good tuning stability. Equally 'cos of all the high side loads on the nut slots the machines are not going to give you any real gain in tone or sustain. I'd just fit a really good nut like Graph Tech; you'll get a bonus in tuning (lower friction) and tone/sustain from that. Looking at your bridge I think a Schaller 455 would have the benefit of looking similar (the black chrome one is a beaut) but would give you loads of sustain and nice fat mid tones as well.

PS to my last; you don't need to go to the states to get GraphTech nuts or Schaller bridges/ Tone Pro bridges.

The basic dollar price might look good but once you add shipping and the ever present risk of getting copped for import duty and VAT it's very seldom worth it. If we all support (I know I've said it all before) the British importers of this gear; WD Musc, Allparts, etc they'll always be here when you need them and there's always the benefit of having a friendly voice on the other end of the phone.

Yep - Bob's right.  I got my TonePros bridge from WD Music here in the UK.

heavier machineheads do increase sustain since there is more mass on the headstock - same principal that those 'sustain clamps' work on (Groove Tubes used to sell 'em).

I like my vintage-style snot green Grovers on my Les Paul, always served me well.

Yeah I'm with twinfan on the machineheads thing. They do however make string changing a bucket load easier.

As for tone pros bridge, Never tried one. Wouldnt know either way... sory I couldnt be more help.

I replaced pretty much all the hardware and electrics on my Richwood Explorer, but the sound is much better.  Part of the problem with cheap bridges is the saddles are rubbish so that the strings don't transmit any vibration into the wood.

Many copies have Gotoh machines on them, it is worth checking to see if this is your case, as if it is, I would not replace them.  If you have some other fake Grover/Schallers, then get Gotoh's as they are the best for the price.

About the bridge: I know someone who changed his bridge on an epiphone les paul, on which it was noticable that the tone was better.
