Change H/S/S to H/S/H ?
« on: February 09, 2007, 09:48:14 PM »
Im tired of single coil in the neck, seriously tired of it.

my guitar is the Ibanez SA 1260 ( http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/ibanez-sa-1260/12080 )

Probably the nicest guitar i've ever had (and i got it for £299!) but really, i'm H/S/H. At least on a mahogany body guitar...

Would this be an easy job for a local luthier to do? not too expencive? and can you get those chrome fittings that go around the 'bucker from ibanez? i still want it to look 'right' !

I just want a RY set damnit

(can anyone suggest someone around here (leeds) to do it?)

i figure it's just a case of routing it properly...

Hey dude, I know exactly where you're coming from, I have a HSS Yamaha Pacifica loaded with a Nailbomb and 2 Trilogies, and I used to be totally fed up with neck single coils, especially for lead work.

With a good EQ pedal (Mids up, treble down) and lots of gain, and I can ALMOST nail that authenic neck HB tone, but not quite. It does the trick, but it could be better.

I've thought of getting it re-routed and sticking a neck Nailbomb in, but it's too much hassle for something that does the job anyway...

But sorry, I have zero experience in doing what you're thinking of doing :(

yeah, it is not a problem to buy humbucker mounting rings in chrome.
But what you can do, is measure the width of the humbucker ring at your bridge, and measure the width of the current cutout for the neck single coil, because maybe this is a bit wider (I am not sure). It wouldn't be nice to fit a humbucker ring, and still see a little bit of the hole of where the original single coil pickup was!

I've never had any routing done for me, but Gordon at musicground repaired my LP neck very well and I was quite impressed by the price, £60 including new strings and a set up. Maybe try there. Dont go to soundcontrol for services repairs etc.

Should be a pretty quick job for a luthier to do - the only apprehension they may have about it is the possibility of weakening the neck join, but most of the extra wood routed will be towards the bridge side of the pickup route that's there now. You could probably do it yourself if you had a router handy, but for a neat job you'd also want a humbucker template like those available from Stew-Mac.
