CSL Guitars - Anyone heard of them?
« on: February 14, 2007, 04:19:39 PM »
I've just been given a very battered Firebird copy by a company called CSL. I've found that they were a japanese company along the same lines as Ibanez.

The guitar looks like it came out of the 70's, is well battered with a solid mahogany body and a 1 piece solid mahogany neck. It has an angled headstock but no scarf joint. The previous owner(s) have botched it about a bit, the bridge pickup cavity has been free routed to accept a normal size humbucker and it looks like the inserts for the bridge have been moved. It could do with some fret attention (reshaping), but I'll give that to my luthier friend to do and have him set it up too, £30 well spent I think. A lot of the edges have had a bit of a battering.

Does anyone have any info about these guitars or the company as I'd like to learn more about it.

I think the guitar is absolutely lovely and the neck is just gorgeous. It may have had a bit of a hard life, but I'm going to leave it more or less exactly how it is and just play it in. From the feel of things then this is the guitar that will be my normal, sitting in the front room, playing axe (I'll leave my posh one nice and safe). Like usual though, I still have to get the pickups and hardware. Oh, once I've got the bridge, I'll measure up and see what the hell someone shimmed the neck pocket with cork for.

Cheers guys, any info will help and I'll post some pics when I can.

Kaj

I don't really know anything about the company, but I remember CSL Les Paul copies were quite widely available when I got my first guitar in the late 70s/early 80s.

As you mentioned, they were Japanese but aimed at a lower price bracket than Ibanez, Aria, Washburn etc.  I think they had bolt-on necks like most of the cheaper LP copies at the time.  They were distributed by Summerfield, Ibanez' UK distributor.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Cheers Philly.

I've seen reviews on HC about the LP copies, but I really can't find anything about the explorer.  Got it in the back of my motor at the minute so hopefully I can get some photo's later.

So far I've found out that they were indeed made by Ibanez just rebadged over here (by Charles Summerfield Limited).

I'm even happier now.

CSL guitars, that takes me back in time to the early 70's and my 1st electric guitar. My CSL was a cherry sunburst Les Paul copy with bolt on neck, although the pickups and the tuners weren't too good it wasn't a bad guitar, if I can remember I changed the pickups for Dimarzio's and I think the tuners for Kluson's. That was the guitar I learnt to play Zep,Free ,Mac,Kinks etc. In fact I gigged with that guitar for a number of years before I p/x for a Gibson Les Paul standard.

If it helps I saw a moving skip on my way to School the other day which had CSL in big letters on the side. Might be symbolic or coincidencial.

It's not neccesarily a bad thing either, saw a skip on the same day which was pink, and advertised www.pinkskips.com on the side. Which I personally think is the most awesome thing ever.
