String gauge/setup/tuning question.
« on: February 21, 2007, 03:51:39 PM »
Thinking of reviving one of my guitars that I don't play much to be my detuned guitar (I've settled on Eb in recent years & aside from occasional forays into Eb/dropC#, don't detune my guitars any further).

It's a 24¾" scale guitar with fixed bridge that I'd quite like to have tuned to C (or maybe B?).

Looking around for some suitably beefy strings to accomodate this, I saw the GHS Zakk Wylde boomers were closest but perhaps a little insane on the low string.  So I've been thinking about getting two different gauges & making a hybrid set:

The top 3 from a D'Addario 11-49 set
The bottom 3 from a D'Addario 13-62 Baritone set

To give me 11/14/18/36/46/62

How well do you think this would work?
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Equally you could get a Zakk wylde 60 set since they come with a 70 or a 60 depending on the pack you buy.
