Getting a Custom Manson, what woods and what BKPs?
« on: February 25, 2007, 01:35:57 PM »
im getting a manson in the next few weeks, but i cant choose between Basswood or mahogany body with flame maple top, could any one recommend on these different woods. also for a basswood body i want a maple neck and rose wood fretboard, for the mahogany i would get a mahogany neck with rosewood fret board.

Now on the BKPs, i have a jackson with Nailbombs in i love them it paired with a Cornford MK50. i really like this combo but want to build a guitar that is really comfortable to play and sounds very articulate. so which pickups would compliment which woods and the amp???

I love the tones of Paul Gilbert, Guthrie Govan, Jimmy Page and Satch.

Paul, Guthrie and satch all use bass wood and jimmy and guthrie use mahogany.

i want the guitar to be really touch sensitive and organic sounding but quick response

As far as sensitive and quick response goes, I'd recommend swamp ash or alder.

Choose pickups after you've settled on the woods.

Mahogany. Basswood isn't the best tone wood around (perfect for down tuned metal, though).

Edit: Since you're having one custom made........if you're willing to spend some extra cash, you could also go for Limba or Koa.

I'd say mahogany body for the touch sensitive and organic, with maple neck for the quick response.
LOVING the Mules!

Here's a nice read-through from warmoth describing tone woods.

Limba/Korina is like a more consistent mahogany with a little something extra. Black Korina is great for Les Paul and PRS type guitars, giving that thick, sweet tone that you associate with vintage Gibsons, White Korina has a little more bite to it and may be more what you're after. They're both also good neck woods.
If I was having a custom build I would have a Black Korina body with a maple top, a laminated maple and rosewood neck and an ebony board, which would give give a good mix of fatness, warmth, cut and dynamics.

that guitar look real nice dude  :D

i think i may go for Koa or Mahogany maybe with quilt/flame maple top, as its a really thick sound that i am after but with detail.
As i already have Nailbombs in my jackson (alder bodied) what pickups do you guys think fits this guitar??? bare in mind i play in similar style to satch, paul gilbert, guthrie govan, jimmy page, and Kirk hammett.

i drive the amp insanly thanks to the THD hotplate, so i dont have any gain peals or fake stuff like that, so it starts at the guitar.

The A5 warpigs seem very powerful and organic but do they clean up well if the volume is rolled back? also could anybody comment on ceremic warpigs or any other BKP you may think would fit this guitar?

just to be a complete pain in the arse, what neck wood?? i think mahogany or maybe birdeye maple with rosewood fret board.

thanks for the help guy  :D

Wouldn't Manson be better able to advise you which woods would be most suitable for your project?

Fair enough. How about a mahogany body with a flame koa top and a solid pau ferro neck? Very Reb Beach I know but it should be a tone monster!
