Author Topic: Ibanez RGA121. Full on metal w/ ceramic warpigs or shred...? (Read 2795 times)

I have an Ibanez Prestige RGA121 (wizard neck, arched top, mahogany body, maple top) on the way. Well, these play like gods, so, I'm going to upgrade the electronics (capacitors, pots, and pickup selector switch) and buy a set of bareknuckles for it, and hopefully it will become god-like in all aspects :lol:

So, here's my choices.

I'm thinking about going for an all out metal setup with a Ceramic Warpig in the bridge and a custom Warpig voiced more like the Cold Sweat in the neck (this is what TonyGibson recently got and was raving about.... sounds nice to me :))...

OR going with a medium/fairly hot versatile set of pickups for shred. For this, I was thinking either a Nailbomb bridge/Cold Sweat neck or Miracle Man bridge/Cold Sweat neck. This set would be aimed at being good for shred, and still being able to be pushed for metal, but also being a little more versatile for other styles since it's not over the top like the CWP...

I'm not sure what to do. Tell me what YOU would do, and convince me of your opinion. :P

Hi Joshua, congrats on the RGA121! That guitar is amazing...I was looking at one of those before I scored my second SCA220.

While I can't say enough good things about the ceramic warpig and warpig "cold sweat like" warpig neck, I'd actually go for a "stock" Warpig set in that type of guitar. A maple cap and maple neck would yield a bright sound that might blend well with Alnico pickups. Then again, I'm saying this due to me owning the "brighter" Warpig set and I want to try something different (which is why I went for a set of Holy Divers in my other SCA220).

Then again, a ceramic warpig bridge and CS neck would be pretty sweet too. Not to sound dismissive, but you really can't lose with the following for an RGA 121:

1) Ceramic Warpig, Cold Sweat neck
2) regular Warpig set
3) Nailbomb set
4) Holy diver set
5) Miracle Man / Cold Sweat neck (great combo that I have in my Les Paul)

Having not tried the CWP, all I can say is you'll be very very happy with the nailbomb bridge, it handles any amount of chug you can throw at it, and with the versatility of alnico, I don't see why you would want to go ceramic anyway.

thanks for the comments, guys. do you think I'd be better off going for the more versatile set, since I do have a boost pedal that I love that I use to hit the front end of my amp harder. it's a keeley katana boost... GREAT pedal.

do you think I'd cover more ground that way? since without the boost I could do lower gain stuff and clean (with coils split) better, but then if I wanted to push it more for really aggressive metal, I could just boost with the pedal.

sound like a good idea?
