VH2, Black Dog or Crawler?
« on: March 05, 2007, 12:38:40 PM »
The agony of choice, and not enough guitars.

I have a US Standard wolfgang with FR.  And want to replace the bridge pickup.  The neck sounds great and seems to have a higher output than the bridge which i find a little course and twangy, strange since VH never uses the neck pickup.

Basically I tend to prefer the mids but also like a good low end thump.  Looking for something pretty versatile that has balls, but cleans up well.  Not to fussed about harmonic potential as IMO all Bareknuckles have this in abundance.  I play a lot of riff based stuff in tandom with chord work and solo's, like sustain and am going for the unsaggy, not scooped raw/organic power, rather than the focused or compressed sound of metalica/zak (i.e. Miracle mans)

Ive narrowed it down to the Black dog, VH2 and Crawler.

(already own sets of Mules/Rebel Yells/Emeralds & Miracle mans)

Anyone got any opinions or experience with these Pups?

I would think the VHII for the tone you describe, but that's only based on what I've read and not (sadly) personal experience.  The Black Dog seems to be voiced with LPs in mind, and I haven't heard of anyone using one in a Superstrat-type.

Can I hijack your thread slightly and ask how you find the Emeralds?  I'm considering a set (or more likely an Emerald/Mule combo), but so few people seem to have them.  What guitar do you have them in, and how do they compare with your other BKPs (especially the RY)?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

honestly I have the Standard Wolfgang with Archtop and recently replaced the licsened floyd rose with an original and replaced the stock pups with Bareknuckle Rebel Yells, and I can tell you that they are amazing pickups, way of an upgrade than anything else that you could put in that guitar...
VHII, Rebel Yell set, Mules set with Alnico II neck

Ive got the emeralds in my epiphone les paul.

Funny story really I spoke to Tim and he recommended the Rebel yells, which i bought and put in my other les paul.  Once they were in there i had to replace the others cause the sound was uncomparable.  However not being able to fork out another £200, i had a look on ebay and took a punt on the emeralds.

Of all the BKP I have these are my favourite, i like a punchy pickup with good mids, its not as gainy as the RY but its got more punch and a slightly thicker tone, perfect for Les pauls I would imagine.

Thanks Ben, that sounds just the kind of tone I had in mind  :).  I like the RY a lot but I want something just a little warmer and darker this time.  It was between the Emerald and the Crawler, now I think I may go with the Emerald and get Crawlers for my Strat (eventually).
