Crack and holes in Guitar body
« on: March 09, 2007, 03:51:04 PM »
Well will a crack and small holes in guitar body have a impact on tone and resonance??? Wil it cause it to sound worse or more relic?? As my guitar has a natural wood exposed as most of the paint have been stripped and there is a crack at the back of  the guitar and a few holes drilled in an attempt to reposition the strap pin. I hear that when wood is exposed it let da wood breathe and we hear wood.

Thx

on an electric it isnt going to do much unless the cracks are very serious - a few small holes at the strap button end will not change the sound in any discernable way.

Well also since my paint is stripped leaving the wood exposed, will my wood be in danger of absorbing moist or drying, and lead to swelling or crack.

Only if you leave it somewhere far to damp.

Wood is hydroscopic which means it contains water and can readily absorb more water, it can also release water and it will continue to do this .  A stripped guitar may expand and contract slightly more than a completely finished one but generally this is not a problem on electrics.  It can be a problem on acoustics and in some climates cause them to need a summer and winter saddle to account for the fact the guitar plays differently at different times of the year.

I think it was john lennon who completey stripped an epiphone casino and then told everyone how much better it sounded - sometimes guitars do sound a bit more 'woody' with no finish, sometimes it makes very little difference at all.

An electric will survive quite nicely without finish for a long time, but it will get very dirty and grimy since it has no protection - look at the rory gallager strats!
