P100 replacement in Gibson es135
« on: March 06, 2007, 10:50:08 PM »
Should I replace the P100's in my es135 with BKP range - or just buy a new guitar! Generally like the guitar to play but it lacks warmth and depth compared to my old Harmony H75 with DeArmond pups. Having siad that the es135 is far more versatile - I play very wide range of styles from Dido to the Sex Pistols and everything inbetween. (Rockabilly, Rock, 60's, Beatles, Pop etc etc). I'm a big Brian Setzer fan but cant afford a Gretsch but that is the type of sound I'm after. Am I likely to gain some warmth just by changing the pups? And if so should I go for BKP90, 91 or 92s? Suggestions welcome!

As in all things, how does your ES 135 sound when played acoustically?

Only when a guitar sounds "right" without an amp, should you try to change pickups to nail the sound you want.  Otherwise, you're looking at bandage solutions rather than addressing the real problem.

That said, the p-100 is a notorious P.O.S. in stock form.  Some have suggested that it can be modified to be a decent pickup.  I *think* this is done by disconnecting one coil, but am not sure which one and I don't want to be responsible for any botched modifications or destroyed pickups.

BKP91 for shure. If you get a set, get an AV magnet in the bridge and an AIV magnet in the neck. Perfect for what you want.
