Pickup suggestion
« on: February 25, 2007, 01:35:16 PM »
I'm looking to replace the stock hummies in my Ibanez S Prestige. I'm looking for passives and I want the most aggressive yet defined distorted tone I can get. So I've been looking at Bareknuckles.

The S is a (thin) mahogny bodied guitar with maple neck. I'm playing mainly Drop C, metal/metalcore-ish stuff. That means, alot of heavy rhythm (palm mutes included), and lead-like melodies (think As I Lay Dying, though I'm not that fond of their tone really).
I want a bridge humbucker for this purpose, preferably with decent cleans, that also works good for lead work (mainly tight rhythm though).

That is:
-Mahogny/maple
-Drop tuning
-Tight rhythm
-Defined even under heavy distortion
-Aggressive (enough mids and treble to cut through)

Suggestions? I'm thinking Nailbomb or Warpig atm.

Also, since the S is Floyd equipped (original Edge), I'd be looking at wide spacing (53mm), even though I've blocked the trem itself, right?

And the pickup switch is Ibanez standard 5-way, would this mean I'm looking for four conductor?

Thanks man :)

I'm leaning towards the Nailbomb, which most people I've asked seem to agree with, but the ceramic Warpig is also a candidate. If I would disregard my need for decent cleans, would the answers be different?

Alright, update. The date for purschase is closing by, but I'm still a little unsure. I've said I wanted not-so compressed pickups all along but I'm getting kind of unsure. I play on a 5150 combo which is already a quite compressed amp, am I right?

Also, my other guitar uses a Seymour Duncan Distortion SH6, and I'm really interested in hearing how that is compared to the Nailbomb and the alnico Warpig in terms of compression and aggression. It sounds quite open and aggressive to me, but I've seen people compare it to a EMG-81, so I'm just really unsure, and since I myself don't have very much experience of comparing pickups I would rather ask you guys for replies. Either way I'm looking for a pickup that's pretty different voiced than the SH6, so now it really depends on how the BKP compares to that.
