1960s Reissue Neck.
« on: March 08, 2007, 12:44:59 PM »
Does anyone know where i can get an early 60s strat neck? It's not gotta have a logo, but it does need historically correct headstock shape, rosewood board, and clay dot inlays. Also a vintage tint would be nice. I can't find anything with the clay inlays. Thanks.
UPDATE: I also want a slab board, as opposed to a curved one, and obviously the adjustable truss rod at the end of the neck that joins the body, rather than at the headstock.

They cost around $3,000 if you are lucky on e-bay!.  You can get clay dots from Callaham and now Warmoth use them, but the only necks I know that you can buy which have the correct headstock thickness would be custom made from someone like Bravewood Guitars.

You can buy necks with a big paddle instead of a headstock and then cut your own.  Wouldn't help with the rest of the specs though

mymy this looks like it's going to be a bitch to find - i might just have to get something from WD without the clay dots and finish it off myself...
I don't believe there isn't a company making replica necks of strats from different time periods.

WOW thanks! exactly EXACTLY what i wanted.

Wait, BIG problem. it says that they "Cannot ship by air or outside the U.S."
I'll have to look for alternative stains. On the original necks, were they made in that vintage amber colour, or have they just gotten that way over time?

UPDATE:
I've found this place: http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/lacquer.html
That sells a vintage tint laquer, which can be used on both body and neck, so i think i'll get this and spray down the whole guitar with it (well, the wooden bits)

I think it's just the way the nitro finish ages - which makes me wonder if the tinted finishes on the reissues will end up as some strange deep tan colour (David Dickinson?) in 30 years' time...  :?

I've been making a few of them actually myself, slab board replicas that is, so I guess I could make you one for a fair price if you still don't find what you want in a few months. One of my current projects is a '62 clone in Daphne Blue that should turn out really nice - I'm still trying to track down accurate measurements of the back of a real early 60's neck to get the neck carve correct though.

The only problem is since I'm at Uni I don't have much time to work on making parts, so it'd take quite a while. I take it you'd want it 100% accurate and thus need Brazilian Rosewood? I just bought a plank of it that's enough for 6 fretboards, it was cut some time in the late 50's/early 60's and has been air dried for 30 years, very nice stuff.

They became that way over time - although some pieces of maple were more yellow than others to start with. It's not just the clear lacquer that ages, but also wood reacts with UV light too so thus darkens with age.

If you are set on clay dots it wouldnt take long to remove the ones from that WD neck and replace them with clay (or clay subsistute dots)

All you do is drill a small hole through the old dot and you will find the torque of the drill normally releases them - if it doesnt you can use the hole to pry them out, then new ones can be glued in and carefully levelled.

All parts sell palstic dots that are close to the right colour:

If you PM me and tell me exactly what you need, I can get you the details.  I have 57 V-neck Strat, 57 tele, 59 slab esquire, 60 slab strat 62 slab tele and 63 curved strat originals and have access to a couple more.

One thing I can tell you though, the late 80's/early 90's Japanese Fenders had very accurately shaped necks.  I have a 62 tele Custom and the neck is almost a clone of my real 62 tele.
