Nailbomb in Explorer tone report...
« on: April 01, 2007, 10:38:37 PM »
ok, so I settled on a Nailbomb for my Explorer and I've had a chance to play around with it for a while.  Very happy with it overall - just what I was after.

It's got that EQ balance I like with a great fat, snarly midrange.  The bass is big & chunky begging you to turn up the gain.  The top end is very clear and cutting, again perfect for heavy doses of gain.

Surprisingly, the clean tone is really nice too - very precise and bell-like.

Clips!
Always wanted an Explorer ... all that early Metallica I guess.
Nice to hear the Nailbombs do good cleans too, nearly bought one myself but just had to go for the Warpig! Always want more, me ...  :P

Ahhh, what a Sunday you've had!
Reminds me, I've been meaning to dig out the Tab for 'Thing and try the Warpig on it. But all classics ... "50 minutes of metal perfection" as the adverts said at the time. Damn it, must go and listen to it now!

Oh well.

Awesome,

I thought you were going to get the Holy Diver.   What changed your mind?

The Nailbomb doesn't get much talk on the forum anymore it seems, but I really like it for clean, rock and metal.

What amps have you tried it with?  I have played with a Jcm900 but the amp is not 100%.

I had it down to the HD and NB - Tim said that the HD would be too dark in an Explorer.  He suggested a VHII or NB - I went for the hotter of the two since I want this for metal mainly.

I'd love to try a HD in the Explorer one day, still curious as hell to hear one - the description of them sounds droolsome

err, dunno - never thought to say really  :?

it's all good anyway, finally got the neck pickup installed too after a week trying to find some mounting screws long enough (damn duncans, grr).  It's only a temporary thing anyway, will have a BKP neck pickup soon as funds allow.

your 5150 clips sound brutal, mine isn't quite that insane as I'm only playing with a Marshall plexi and treble booster.  We're talking early Metallica (Kill 'Em All) gain levels.

I've got a Digitech Death Metal pedal on the way for some mad gain - should be ok for the bedroom.

Also secured a Laney GH100L head, so I'll be in metal nirvana very soon.

just with my plexi with either a treble booster or SD-1.  not exactly a metal setup but as mentioned in one of my last replies, my metal rig is in the pipeline.

Joe,

I tried a GH100L and a 6505+ at Wembley Guitar Centre and although I liked the Peavey best for out and out metal, the Laney wasn't far behind at all.  Certainly nothing a SD-1 couldn't solve for some extra oomph!!!
