BK dont really do 'equivelants' of other pickups. They all have unique characters. I've definately never played a duncan or dimarzio that can be compared to a BK, anyway!

The typical choices for shred tend to be miracle man bridge and cold sweat neck. They dont sound much like those pickups. They sound much, much better.

If you could describe the actual sound in your head that you want, it would help us make recommendations for you.

As far as I know - the Holy Diver is similarly voiced as today's JB but it doesn't have the mush, the fizz and the mid-spike. The Rebel Yell is said to be somewhat similar to the old JB. The previous - ceramic - version of the Holy Diver was similar to the Super Distortion but with a more natural sound, as the Holy Diver is wound with plain enamel wire. There are three vintage PAF's in the BK range: Mule, Stormy Monday and Riff Raff. There are other neck models as well, though, that are vintage-voiced. For a good neck shred pickup, check out the Cold Sweat, Holy Diver or maybe VHII neck. There's been a comparison between two guitars with the same specs in the Players room recently where the VHII ate the Paf Pro for breakfast. Other brands are a good starting point but I think the BK range is quite different from other brands. Dimarzio and SD can't really be compared, either.

You might want to have a look at the Painkiller as well if you're looking for that early 80's NWOBHM sound.

instead of wasting money on cheap pickups before upgrading to BKP's, why not just go to a music store and try out some guitars with seymour duncans and stuff? look for some friends that have upgraded pickups and stuff...

There are a lot of guitars at stores that have Duncans installed. Many Ibanez models have Dimarzios. As far as I know you can only benefit from SD's exchange program, if you're in the US. I think Bare Knuckle has an exchange program, too, and offers lifetime warranty. If I were you, I'd try some guitars with SD's and Dimarzios, and then email Tim with my questions and order a BK set - especially if you're in Europe, as you'll get more pickup for your money. :) Good luck! :)
