Sigh. Now my amps making loud shushing sounds...

Not had it that long, Laney GH50L, and after about 5 minutes I get a wholebuncha white noise - or it could be pink noise, I'm not an engineer so I don't know the difference.  Of course, valves aren't covered by the guarantee, so it's not going to be cheap. :( Plus I'm going to be without it for however long... :(

I bet it's down to the warmer weather making the room it's in get too hot.  [It get's a lot of sun in the afternoon, because it faces west] There's air all round it, it's got one side near a wall, but the back's got a good 6-8 inch gap...

Sigh... It never rains...

I believe the difference is that white noise covers the whole range of frequencies whereas pink noise is only those within the human hearing range.

Hmmm... how would I know which valve to change? (Ah, it's the one in V1... [d'oh]) Do the pre-amp valves have to be a matched set?

Thanks. (Is there anything that you folks don't know?) So, from my point of view, I wouldn't be able to hear the difference.

I'd just change the V1 tube first.  They don't have to be a matched set, unlike power valves.  If you have a spare ECC83 knocking about then just throw that in and see if it cures it.  If you're ordering one, it's worth paying a touch extra for a high quality one as the V1 position is prone to going microphonic.

I've got a few spares if you fancy a trip to Manchester to check it out.

My Laney also does this.

I retubed the whole thing which stopped the noise but then it came back about a few days later.

white noise is a SPECIFIC soft static which effectively cancels out other sounds.  Sound cancelling headphones use it, makes you feel like you're on an airplane and your ears are plugged.

Pink noise is just a plain old tone of noise within the human ear range.  The beep on an answering machine is pink noise.

ANYWAYS, my line 6 spider used to do this, i took it in for repairs and all the dude did was replace some wires and it was good to go. I think its an output transformer problem.
my maxon OD 808 really DOES make poop sound good

It gets weirder. Tonight it started out shushing (but not as loud as before). Then, after playing Wonderwall up to the end of the first chorus... it went quiet. :? I don't get it...

Ditto, mine does it too.

I`m trading it in for a Trace Elliot C100 Speed Twin.

You may have a ground looping problem?

It's the most common cause of noise and hum, the only way to fix it from experience is to buy a distribution block, aka a Belikin surgemaster with multi plug sockets and plug everything (with a plug socket) in the room into that. This fixed all my hum problems, especially valve amp hum. My amp now runs silent!

To test this theory I'd try it out, if it's still hums then it's likely to be an amp problem.
