an HSS strat to have 3 volume pots and a normal 5 way switch. The switch is confusing me, it's an unusual one I think (http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/shop/products.php?category=318&product=4222)

I've never wired a guitar before, or really anything else for that matter. The black wires from all 3 pups connect to the top of a pot and the inside of the jack, right?

So, the red and white wires would connect each to a pot  (is it the outside 2 connections on the pots?) and then on to the switch somehow? Or am I more confused than I thought I was?

For what you want you could take the white from the pickup to one outside tag and then the center tag would go to the switch.  The blacks all go to ground.  The other outside tag of the pots needs to go to ground too.
So many pickups, so little time

Guitars use the bridge for grounding, right?

So, if you ignore my complete lack of paint skills I'm looking at something like this, then. What do I do with the switch? Something like the second picture? (with 1, 2, 3 being connections from the 3 pots) What connects to the other connection on the jack plug? Couldn't be the other side of the switch?

Thanks.

edit - on closer inspection of the switch itself, that wouldn't work at all. Damn.

Well, wired two pots back to front but other than that I think I worked out what goes where. Only trouble is I'm getting one hell of a lot of noise. Seems like it's an earthing problem, but I can't narrow it down more specifically than that. I've connected the tops of the 3 pots to each other, to one outer connector of the pots and to the black lead of each p/up (and the uncoloured outer wire on the humbucker), then on to the bridge and the jack socket. Nothing appears loose. Anyone got any ideas what it could be? Cheers.

Edit - So apparently there's such a thing as a "ground loop"... This is the point where I'd think about sticking to playing guitars, if I weren't such a shockingly bad player.

Yoiu need to use a 'Star' wiring for grounds to avoid a loop.

This means picking one central point for a the grounds to meet, so that there is nowhere other than this with more than 1 ground connection.  Usually the back of the volume is picked for this, but if you are a bad solderer, then it is safer to solder a wire to each pot, the ground on the jack, and, depending on the guitar, the sping claw or fix a ground to the tailpiece.  Then take all these and solder them together, and tape up the connection.
