Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a new set of humbuckers on my guitar. I have a PRS Custom 22 with original Dragon I pickups on it. Its a hard tail model with hollow chambers inside the body. The current pickups sound so muddy and unclear, specially with any amount of overdrive. To be honest I reckon my guitar sounds dead when its plugged in and I have a dream of it one day coming to life. Anyone experienced this on their PRS?
I would like to have a more chimey and probably twangy tone, bit like a tele. Something more responsive and alive. I know I wont be very popular on this site but I am now wanting a more indie sounding pickup.
I still would like this pickups to hold its own in a rock context, but I dont need anything really gainey. I cant decide between Stormy Mondays, Mules, Riff Raffs, VH2 or Back dogs. Actually the whole catalog sounds great as do (almost) all the clips.

Welcome. My best guess from your description is that you'll be after something with low-ish output and with quite a vintage voicing. Therefore, I'd venture the VHII could be a little bit hot, but that's only based on the clips I've heard.

I've currently got a set of Mules in a Les Paul, and they are incredibly versatile with a very rounded clear tone. They clean up excellently, and sound great for blues and hard rock, as well as stuff like Matchbox20 and The Calling, which is about as close to indie as my CD collection gets. As for Tele-ish twang, I'm not sure, as I've got them in the wrong sort of guitar to judge.

I'm pretty sure a set of Mules will serve you well; I don't think I've ever seen anyone complaining about the tone from their Mules on this site! I'm sure more people with more experience of different pickups than me will weigh in, so don't make a snap decision. Good luck.

i say black dog with coil split

have you got covers/going to get covers? if so get a Mississippi queen for the neck, i have this combo in my LP and it kills any indie track with the coil-split, but you can also kick in the second coil for any 'louder' stuff

.I do,a little bit ;but i have Dragon2 and was not satisfied.Very nice sound unplugged but pups lacks harmonics,overtones..Tomorow,i will get my Custom22 fitted with Mules 8) ,i can hardly wait !So,if you want,i will be able to tell you more tomorow...I think the guitar is so good unplugged that we are expecting more of the same with the pups...What kind of amp do you have ?

At the moment I am using either a Tech 21 Trademark 300 head and cab and also a modded Vox Cambridge 30. I really like the clean sound on the Vox and use a variety of pedals to get my distortion tone.
I will post a clip when I have upgraded the pickups. Decisions...
