I am looking for the right fit, HELP!!
« on: May 22, 2007, 12:53:54 AM »
I am in the process of building my own guitar, and of course i want to equip it with the best of the best for the sound that i am after.  I would say that i am primarily an aspiring (and by aspiring, i mean i suck) Metal musician.  My main field would be Black Metal, but not limited to that.  I like to play hi pitched screeching dissonant chords (my favs exist in the 12th-24th fret area), and once i obtain the skill to rip out the harmonics arsenal, that will be freely flowing out of my amp as well.  However, despite all of this high end grandeur, i do not want to sacrifice my beloved mid range, and bass is important in any genre of metal.

Let it also be known that i do intend to go all out in the clean tone area as well (still loads of dissonance, but hey), so distortion is not my only tool.

I was told about this operation by one of the guys in my guitar building program, and i am glad he did.  All the samples i have heard so far have been mindblowing... and from what i have heard (from him and through this forum's sound clips) i am leaning towards the nailbomb.  Anyone have suggestions otherwise or arguments for one or the other... can anyone give me a more accurate description of the the Frequency range than is given on the website?

If people could help me out with all or even one of these questions it would be a big help.  I will be sure to post pics of my axe when it is completed and close ups of the Bare Knuckles of course!

Favorite Bands, some of which are not BM (if this helps): Deathspell Omega, Negura Bunget, Belketre, Gorguts, Monolithe, Blut Aus Nord, Secrets of the Moon, Monarch, MOSS, Belenos (Fra), Abigor

Thanks in advance!

I think the Nailbomb would be a good choice it is very articulate and organic and sounds great for metal. It also has very nice cleans making it very versatile. Holydiver would be another one to think about as it is also great for heavy music while having great cleans. The holydiver also seems to have more mids. I'm not familiar with any of those bands you mentioned so I can't really comment on how well it will do that style, so hopefully someone else can give some more help.

I never played BKP but reading the decriptions I think it should go as it follows :
Bridge : Ceramic Warpig (for BM)
Neck : Nailbomb ? (for other bands)

@ TomW: Do you think a combo of a Holydiver and Nailbomb would be something worth considering?  If so, which would be neck and which would be bridge?

@ eternal_metalhead: Would the Warpig really be suited for BM though?  I mean so much low end... I can see it being used for Death Metal, Doom, even the more groove driven stuff, but BM?

Could anybody give me any recommendations about combos, like what you think would work best other than these two?

I've just had a quick listen to a couple of the bands you mentioned and I would say Nailbomb for the bridge.
However I havn't tried any of the BKP neck pickups yet so I can't really say which to go for. The Cold sweat neck pickup seems to be a popular choice for many of the metal players here. However it depends on what you're going to use the neck pickup for. It would probably be a good idea to email Tim to find out what he would reccommend as he'll be able to help.
What guitar are you going to put the pickups in?

@ TomW: This guitar is going to be a flying V custom of my own personal design.  I am building it myself, by hand, with the only major electrical tool being a band saw.

Specs:  630, Mahogany Body, Mahogany Neck/headstock, ebony fretboard, quilted maple veneer on front (and what a beautiful piece of quilting this is!!!), gold mother of pearl inlays, and i am looking to go for all gold hardwear.  It is guaranteed (i hope) to be certifiably baddass, and then some.  It doesn't look a thing like anything else anywhere, custom or otherwise, so i am pleased with that factor.

As for your pickup suggestion, i was thinking about nailbomb for the bridge too!  As for the neck pickup, i may not want something so high output, getting that articulation i think will be big for me, especially because i was classically trained in lute for 2 years (which i wholeheartedly intend to pick up again in the near future) and that comes through in my playing, even in my (extremely novice) "solo" improvisations. BTW, which of the bands did you happen to let into your eardrum?

Thanks for the help too!

I listened to Deathspell Omega, Negura Bunget and Secrets of the moon on their myspaces. I think holydiver bridge would also be able to get you close to those kinds of tones, or even the miracle man bridge, however the miracle man doesnt do cleans so well. I definately think you should consult Tim before buying though to make sure you make the right decision and get a set of pickups that will compliment your setup.

every contemporary line BKP will do it very well
they all are able to suit all metal styles
just choose what characteristics do you like in a high output pickup
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Well, for something like Moss, i'd say a ceramic Warpig, as you'd get that really fat doom tone  with loads of bass and mid :D I'd suggest the Nailbomb however, as i think it'd suit you with your clean stuff too :)
Nailbomb, VHII, Warpig 7, MQ, Black Dog, 10th Anniversary
