CWP and CS match well in an EBMM petrucci?
« on: May 20, 2007, 02:06:47 AM »
I have an ernie ball music man petrucci, which I love, but I'm thinking about swapping the bridge pickup. I play tech metal... I already love the neck pickup (custom for petrucci.... think it's probably very similar to a dimarzio air norton) so I might not change it, but I might just order a coldsweat for the neck just to have BKP's in both positions...

anyways, I was wondering, is there going to be a huge difference in volume between the pickups? normally you could mess around with the pickup heights (raise the neck pickup, lower the bridge pickup) to get them to even out more, but this guitar has a very limited range in how much you can raise the pickups...

both pickups sound perfect for me... I want something tight and crushing for the bridge (CWP) and smooth, liquid leads for the neck (CS)... I'm just a little worried that the CS won't have enough output to match up well with the bridge, especially since I can't adjust the pickup heights much.

what do you think?

maybe tim could wind a hotter version of cs neck
the normal version is 8.35k, closer to air classic, not air norton (which is 12-13k, i think)

i'd go with miracle man neck (i think it's 17k)
nailbomb or painkiller neck are probably hot enough too

get a Ceramic Warpig for Tech Death, just listen to (Dez) Lepermessiah's clips on the clips section. and he also uses a cold sweat in the neck..

also ask tim about the older CS neck model that was about 16k might be better suited to the Ceramic Warpig eitherway I had the Miracle Man/Cold Sweat combo and it absolutely rocked my socks off!

The Cold Sweat neck pickup is the same as the Miracle Man neck.........Alnico V DC17.5K............hot, fluid and masses of sustain. The in between tone with both CS bridge(ceramic) and CS neck(Alnico V) on together is lovely and quacky :D

(Tim talking about the old CS neck in aug 2005)

i think the warpig neck is the same pickup too, but with weird screws

hmmmm 17.5K

yeaaaah that sounds much better

so what happened with the newer cold sweat? just decided to make it lower output, hmm?

by the way, this guitar currently is wired so that the middle position uses one coil from the neck and one coil from the bridge mixed to sound like a neck single coil on a strat... and that sounds VERY good.... just like a strat. I love using that for brighter cleans. I would wire the CWP and CS the same way, because it sounds great... I think it'd probably still work well... just may be a little hotter output...

I also use the neck pickup (air norton) with tone knob rolled down a bit for warm jazzy cleans. would you guys say the coldsweat is has a nice warm, punchy clean sound too?
