How do musicians get endorsed??

Not that i am expecting to or anything.

But it's something that i've always been curious about.

For example is there a minimum criteria that has to be met for an endorsement to be offered.

if for example james hetfield started using BKs would he be offered an endorsement as a lot of players are influenced by his sound and would go out and buy the pickups just to get that bit closer in turn hetfield would be making BK money.

there are various types of endorsement deals too.  some companies offer the products at a reduced rate with the artist being listed as an endorsee.  others just give the gear to the artists in return for a higher-profile endorsement (i.e. Zakk Wylde)

the company has got to decide how popular a band is before offering endorsement deals - pointless endorsing a local band with no following, it makes poor business sense.  it will however vary from company to company depending on their own size and stature within the industry.

I think if you're in a local band, already own the company's stuff and are playing regular gigs, you can send them a message saying "Yo, can you put me on your site since I love your shite" and they'll have you up as an endorsee on the site- that won't be a major thing though, unless the band gets really big.  It'll just be "This guy uses our stuff and says it's integral to his sound so we put him up here."

Roll on the day I have my own custom guitar and amp :D

depending on a LOT of stuff.

how many gigs you play, are you featured on the TV often, how popular you are, how many albums you have., etc etc etc.

the deals vary from discount on gear, to free gear.

:D A mate of mine was in a band that had an endorsment through the Bass Centre in Wapping. It was for GHS strings the band had a little independant deal ( record Company). They could buy GHS strings at cost. The deal was agreed between both the shop & the distributer of the strings. The shop thought the band would be good to take a gamble on so talked the distributer into taking a gamble. If the band got more popular then the band would start to get things for free. Its always worth asking suppliers/distributers etc as they can only say no. If your in a band building up a local reputation give it a go you`ve got nothing to loose !

ESP and Warwick do too.

I've met at least 4 guitarists endorsed by ESP.
My last FM.
ESP Horizon NTII.
ESP Viper Camo.
ENGL Screamer.

Seriously, though, like everyone said the word means different things to different artists and companies.

To, me, artists endorse products, not the other way around. These are products the artist should feel strongly about, and can wholeheartedly recommend. The artist becomes an advocate for the company, and in return can purchase product at a reduced cost.

If an artist is receiving free product from a company, that company is sponsoring the artist, in my opinion.

So, the question is: how does one go about doing it?

At a minimum you should have the following at your disposal, though some or  all of these things may nor may not be required as it varies from company to company:

- A finished demo, promo CD, or album
- A press kit that contains band photo, bio, gig list, and any press reviews
- A cover letter with the band logo at the top that explains why you are interested in this company as well as detailing any other artist endorsements you may have

In today's world, you will more than likely be submitting your request via email. I usually include my full name, band name, web site and myspace URLs, as well as the other info in the email.

The key to the actual request is to BE BRIEF. You can get into more detail in further correspondence as needed. Your first contact is simply to request information on what you need to sumbit to be considered for an endorsement or artist pricing.

Hope you find this info helpful!!
