single coil sized humbuckers?
« on: June 24, 2007, 01:11:47 AM »
i was wondering if tim was ever going to make a single coil sized HB such as the SD JB Jr or hot rails or the DiMarzio Chopper and such. my uncle has heard my BKs and thinks itd be badass to be able to get a cold sweat nuck pup in his charvel that only has a SC slot in the neck.

Fraid not mate.

BKP only make true single coils - In other words, no mini buckers, and no noiseless.

That being said, wasn't there a Mini mule some time ago?

I think that was P-90 sized though.

The thing with single coil sized humbuckers is they don't sound like a good single or a good humbucker.Pickup tone consists of many variable, obviously wire and magnet combinations but as important as coil size and height.

The main thing with cancelling the hum in a single coil is it looses it's edge as not only are the 50/60 cycle frequencies cancelled but others too which contribute to the tone.
On the other hand a humbucker gets it's rich tone from cancelling hum and also the fact the pickup is so much larger, picking up tone from a wider area.

At the end of the day, I personally feel it's too much of a compromise.Don't take this as knocking other makers humcancelling singles-everything serves a purpose for different types of players. Some sound better than others, it's just none do it for me so I channel my energies into areas I feel worth developing.

There's already been threads on this, although I can't find the specific one I was thinking of, here is basically TIms attitude on SC sized HBs.

DiMarzio Cruiser or Seymour Duncan Lil 59

My two favourite Humbucking single coils.

The Cruiser has more attack and snap and somewhat sounds like a single coil with more "balls" the Lil59 sounds more like a humbucker but it can get a bit muddy and overwhemling at times.
