Mixed 4x12 speakers in an x-pattern - worth it?
« on: September 10, 2007, 08:59:11 AM »
Is anyone using a mixture of speakers in an x-pattern?  Do you like it?  Have you compared it to the same speakers split 2 top/2 bottom?  What were the differences?

I use an ENGL with a split... it works for recording, but live the X Pattern really mixes it up.

I use two cabs with Vintage 30's and V12-60's - it's teh bomb for metal

It also depends on the output of the speakers.  If one gives a lot more than the other (more than 1.5 db), then the top bottom pattern works better imho.  The X pattern then favours the higher output speaker and you don't hear the other as well.   The G12H/Vintage 30 works really well in an X because both have a 100dB sensitivity.  Putting a G12M/G12H works better with the G12M on top because they have a 98dB sensitivity (or 96dB for the hertitage).
So many pickups, so little time

Thanks Phil!  I'm thinking of adding two G12H Anniversary's to my V30'd 4x12 so the X pattern sounds like the way to go if I do it.

It never ceases to amaze me how much knowledge there is on this forum!

I have thought about upgrading the speakers in one of my cabs to G12H's... are they punchy?

They're not as punchy as V30s.  Better for cleaner stuff, but a bit sweeter with a slight mid cut.
