So, just how much do semis feedback? (WI67pro)
« on: September 17, 2007, 02:07:17 PM »
STILL looking for a backup/replacement for my Gibbo LP   and came across this Washburn WI67pro for a very good price of £299 new on ebay:

I like the look of it and the cutaway that allows for easier access on higher frets. Semi design presumably gives a more fatter resonant sound? I'm also considering the WI66 which is the same guitar but with a solid body, but for some reason that model is £30 more.

Everything about it seems good except I'm not sure about the semi-hollow design. I've never had one so I have no idea how prone they are to unwanted feedbacks. So I'm a bit paranoid. Will I get crazy amounts of uncontrollable feedback at mid-high gain at gig volumes? Or is it not as bad as single coils for feedback?

Thanks

PS, which do you think is the best guitar out of these: Washburn WI66/67, Ibanez AR300 (Korean reissue), PRS Custom SE, Lag Roxanne (£300 model) and Yamaha SG (pricy though). Feel free to suggest other 2Hum double cut mahogany guitars.

I'd take a look at the Vintage range of LP copies.  They seem pretty good for a backup and they're reasonable priced.  A Korean Tokai would be good also.

with a guitar like that the tonal difference is small and its mostly for weight and appearance - not saying there isnt a difference, just that its quite small.  Same with thinline tele's and stuff like that (chambered electric guitars) - generally a bit more open sounding but not impractical as far as feedback is concerned

they get more prone to feedback the more hollow they are.  Stuff like 335's  (semi-acoustics) are more acoustic like in construction so will start to feedback more but its still controlled because they have the solid centre section.  When they are fully hollow (archtops and the like) you get lots more feedback.

that guitar is described as a smi acoustic but it looks more like a chambered guitar in construction to me

Amount of air inside and size of sound holes seem to be the major contributing factors

Either way really, it just depends what kind of gain you are using with them and you might want to avoid pointing the guitar towards speakers if its fully hollow, unless you want to have some fun.... its generally quite a nice feedback

It's a semi-hollow design. As long as you're not playing with metal amounts of overdrive you should be fine. Overdrive on 2/3 or 3/4 and mids around 12 o' clock shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Even full hollow bodies can take more than you might think. As long as the pickups aren't high gain and properly wax potted and keep some distance between the guitar and the amp.

i remember i once did a temporary swap of a 335 copy for my steinberger, i wanted to record some acoustic feedback. ironically the steinberger had dimarzio super distortions in at the time, and fedback much more than the semi ;)

i'm not too sure about the feedback (as i suspect it depends on the guitar), but that's a very good price. I know i really liked the wi65pro version of that guitar (not hollow/chambered, and without the maple top). those washburn pros are very good value if you can get a good price on them, if you ask me.
