Advice for Patrick Eggle Guitar
« on: October 03, 2007, 12:13:47 PM »
I have an all mahogany Berlin Stage T guitar with rosewood neck. It currently has Kent Armstrong coil tapped humbuckers fitted which I find are okay as single coils but a bit harsh as humbuckers. So I'm after replacements. The type of sounds I have in my head are those that are played by Dave Grissom here:

and here:

note the sound of the chords at the start of this song.
and this is the PRS demo:

Does anyone have any suggestions and can BKP's be coil tapped successfully?

i'd say any of the vintage to vintage hot bkp's would get you into that ballpark.  seeing as you want good tapped sounds too, it might be better to go for one of the slightly hotter ones, maybe Crawlers?  for the basic humbucking sounds i reckon mules would be ideal, and to me Crawlers have a similar tonality, just a bit more power.  Abraxas might be another option?  Any of those should sound great, and will be a big improvement over the Armstrongs.

i have a Berlin Standard, which is basically the same as the Stage, although mine is the hardtail version.  i currently have Warpigs in it and have been amazed at the kinds of sounds i've gotten, they can do a lot more than just metal!  The guitar really came to life when i put them in, the Armstrong's really didn't compare!  but still, i reckon you want one of the less powerful pickups.
cry HAVOC!! and let slip the pigs of war!!!

Thanks for your opinion blue, unfortunately I can't find a sample for the Abraxis and all the other samples seem to rely on distortion effects of some kind. It may be better for the samples to include clean sounds with EQ set flat to give a level playing field so to speak!
