The Tiny Terror is awsome, I've just got one. Not sure how well it would do at a gig. I have it through a 1x12 and it's bloody loud in a flat. i heard it in a shop through a 4x12 and it was good and loud, but again, I'm not sure how well that would translate to gig volumes.

I have a peavey ValveKing 112, great clean sound, but I don't think it compares well to the TT for dirt (although in fairness I've never been able to put the gain up enough to test it properly).

I'm just echoing what everybody has said here but I'd recommend JCM800s, Laney GHs, VCs and Oranges although to stay within budget you'd have to go used. Laney GH half stacks regularly go on ebay for less than £400 which is a killer deal. You should contact Woogie if you want a Laney VC30 he has a 2x12 version for sale.

Edit: By the way, if going by the ebay route, it costs roughly £80 to get a valve half stack delivered. A lot of money but could be worth it if the deal is right.

I can certainly vouch for the VC30 though mine is a 2 x 10.Gigged mine a lot-great clean tones. There are better amps around but you'd be hard pressed to get something as good for the money.I got mine for £165.00 off Ebay being patient and stealthy.

For the tones you describe, I'd go for a Laney GH50L head.  As long as you don't need a sparkiling clean tone for gigging, they're a superb amp for very, very little money.  I sold mine a while back for £250 which is what they seem to go for.  Even brand new they're just under £400.

I'd go for:

Used GH50L = £250
Used 1936 Marshall 2x12 = £175
Total = £425

Then after a few gigs, or when you get a few quid, I'd swap the speakers in the 2x12 from the standard G12T-75s to something a bit warmer.  I'd recommend Celestion Vintage 30s, G12H30s or G12-65s.

You sound like you have same sort of amp requirements as me. I have a Marshall JCM900 4100 Dual Reverb head and a 1936 2x12 cab with Vintage 30's in and it's perfect.

If I didn't have that, I'd probably have a Peavey Valveking.

With your budget and the influences you've listed you really want to be getting a Laney GH50L or GH100L head.  These are the same circuit as the single channel JCM800 Marshalls but with some slight circuit tweaks to get a bit more gain and the resonance mod to beef out the low end.

What makes them sound so different to Marshalls then?
I always found them very muddy - better with single coils though
Is it these mods that you speak of or is it the transformer?

I suspect that the H+H speakers they were using didn't help either

That's interesting muddy is the last word I'd use to describe my Laney. If anything it sounds like a Marshall that had all its fizz removed and rounded up a bit. It just doesn't sound as grindy and abrasive as Marshalls. The stock HH speakers that used come in the Laney amps were horrible though maybe that's why you found them muddy Jonathan? The 70/80s that come on the combos now are much better but they sound kind of 2 dimentional.

When I play my Marshall 2210 and my Laney at bedroom volumes they sound surprisingly similar. When I put them on hotplate they start to change a lot, the Marshall starts to give out that juicy overdrive that you typically associate with Marshall amps. Large part of the difference must be something to do with the power amp.

+1 on Laney. I've never found any of them muddy. Certainly clearer than some of the valve marshalls I've played. However I'd get a digitech bad monkey over an SD1. I've owned both within a week of each other, and the SD-1 goes from muddy to ear piercingly harsh with no real middle ground, whereas the monkey doesn't suffer from the same problem and is generally more usable.

The DOD 250 is also good. If your budget for a boost is higher there's always the trusty TS808 or TS9.
