Mules in '76 Gibson custom with maple neck.

why did they make the fret access so bad? none of the other Randy rhoads' are like that...

I think because this is Randy's prototype, they built this one the way he wanted it.
and after he passed on, I guess they made it more commercially appealing / improved it to some peoples perspectives.

not quite. he never finished the production prototype. The RR's that are out today are just based on the one he played and Jackson just changes whatever they want to what they think will sell.

He still was making some "minor" changes on the model but... the black one is the shape of the modern RR Jacksons we all know today. The other 2 guitars he ordered were exactly the same shape as the black one but were never supervised or speced by him because he died... That is when Jackson made it a "model", named it RR and started making them with different specs and versions for the public.
