Which pickup to choose? Need Advice
« on: October 16, 2007, 03:52:44 PM »
I Like to tune To D Standard to suit our singer voice and because I like the tone more a little darker crunchier overall more heavy, I play death metal-esque type music.
I was looking at an X2N for the bridge and maybe a Paf pro or another x2n in the neck, but then i came across Bk pickups What I'm wondering is which pickup would best suit my style I want a really heavy and aggressive tone, pretty good clarity, alongside aggressive harmonics. I want a really heavy, thick crunchy tone, tight palm mutes.A hotter pickup would be nice, clean tones from the bridge aren't needed, thats what a good neck pickup is for and I use chorus for most of my cleans anyways. I don't cut my mids, if anything I whore my mids boosting them really hard for a heavy crunchy type setting.  I want a good chugging pickup I play a mahogany body guitar that is string through and a set neck/ neck through design.
Warpig?
Painkiller?
Miracle Man?
Other options?

Thanks in advance, appreciate it it...

Ok thanks, but im wondering what are the main differences between the miracle man and the pk because i want those screamin harmonics as well and which has the overall heavier/thicker tone, ive read about every post on these forums comparing clips and the mm and pk seem really close but the pk seems slightly more aggressive, can it get the harmonics as well cuz i like to play alot of pantera and i need the harmonics for dives etc

thx... you guys r helping alot

The PK is middier and crunchier, and I may get some flak from peeps here and there, but I think its a fair bit tighter too (if that were possible!)

Pinches scream on both.

For pantera, go with the PK. The MM doesnt have the mids for it. The PK, on the other hand, is one step away from (potentially) being called the "New Level". Through a fairly high gain amp (its powerfull, but its not all that powerfull) its got pantera all over it.

thanks but u lost me when you commented on it being potentially called the "New Level" were you by any chance making a reference to the song by pantera? You also say its powerful but not all that powerful, that comment kind of stumped me as well.

Which neck pickup would work well the pk neck model? How are the cleans on that because although i don't do cleans a lot i like to do the slow breaks in the middle of songs with clean riffs  then move back into heavier distortion. The cleans don't need to be amazing but usable.

dimebag pickup's didn't have lot of mids
the l500xl is scooped and thin
very clear and trebly
not too much output
and that's why he used a lot of mid boosters before the distortion (graphic AND parametric equalizers)

my holy diver works great for pantera tone when boosted
the miracle man worked great too, just a bit over the top if i used the same boosting level

the l500xl has plenty of mids.... dime just chose to cut them, believe me... this is my current pickup, not really a thin tone at all. just not my tone. many people love them though... more power to them i guess

yea personally i dont like dimes tone, suits his style... ive gotten close enough to it and have played with it and it doesnt suit me very well... His gear was based around having no mids lots of treble.. a really harsh setting.. he had a graphic eq and a parametric cutting mids, i dont like that i need my mids to cut through. When i play pantera i dont cut my mids and i think it sounds fine. So ignore my comment about me playing pantera. That was more along the lines of a harmonically rich tone not a mid-less tone :D

Believe me ive lived pantera and ive researched and own most of the gear he had used/ endorsed... my current amp being a warhead which was never recorded with but dime did play live occasionally with a warhead and i think its one of the heaviest sounding amps around the $500-$600 price range.

I just want a good heavy tone, that will cut through, an aggressive type tone per say.

Tight low end not a harsh top end plenty of uber crunchy mids and harmonics on demand. That is my dream pickup.

i have to disagree
i'm a dime fanboy and reasearched all his tricks
he cutted mids AFTER the distortion, in the amp EQ,  but the graphic (mxr) and parametric (furman) equalizers were used before the amp BOOSTING the mids, not cutting
you can find it in pics and he said it in some interviews
search for the guitar world riffer madness compilation

i had a l500xl too
i think you're confusing brightness with mids
the pickup is bright and trebly, but not middy
reminds me a lot of seymour duncan george lynch screaming demon, but more punchy

i think no BKP has a similar voicing to l500xl, but the closest one would be the cold sweat

the miracle man has a similar curve to duncan dimebucker, but sounds nothing like it or any other pickup
the low mids are very natural and have an awesome kind of motorcycle growl
it may sound a bit compressed for bedroom playing, but when you play it LOUD, the tone opens a lot and it becomes a metal monster

think of painkiller as an already mid boosted dime tone
it's very close to gibson 500t and duncan distortion but without the noise and the annoying dirt and the bass doesn't turn into mud like these pickups
it's crunchy and middy but still tight and clear

well ima huge dime sheep as well and the tones i manage to get through my l500xl are decently middy (maybe not naturally dunno, always had a 10band in front of it and a pq-3 after that) not huge and thick but by no means shrill or thin, you are right it is a really trebly pickup but yea i guess for early pantera they may have been boosted but i distinctly remember seeing a magazine article showing how dime had his mxr 6 band in a v.. but they may have very well been wrong, was supposeably said in a face to face interview but ive since been able to find the magazine, i know for damageplan he did as you said and it would make sense for him to have done so previously not trying to prove you wrong or anything just trying to clarify, if im wrong then my bad and thx for correcting me.

As far as pickups go... what would you recommend for bridge/neck

i need a few cleans but mostly just massive crunch, nice tight low end and heavy low mids wihout a shrill ear piercing high end(l500xl) and harmonics are a must cant be muddy. but needs to have a huge bottom end. moreso for a death/doom type genre i guess think dethklok lol but less compressed (i hate emg tone)

Bridge: Painkiller
Neck: Cold Sweat or Abraxas.

I have none of these pickups, so don't take my word for it :) I have a miracle man, which I absolutely adore. I play very downtuned hardcore/uglycore music (see sig), and I don't have a very middy sound. From what I understand, the miracle man will be "too clinical" for you - too scooped most likely. The painkillers will do squeals, agression, and also all that lovely tight chuggy stuff we all love to do.

Doooo eeeeet!
