Fuzz.Distortion Heads!
« on: January 15, 2008, 05:19:28 PM »
Hi chaps...long time no see....been busy with promoting the band and life...

It's time for my band to take the next step up. I've got MASSIVE enthusiasm and drive for this now!

Anyway,

I was watching videos on youtube last night, and I came across this:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=cAIHRIO73e8

Any clues on what fuzz/distortions can get those kind of scuzzy yet cool sounds? Some fuzzes I've used tend to get quite 'velcro-y'; I'm not so much abou tthat. I really like the fuzzes that seem to settle over your guitar notes like a nice warm blanket. Definition + warmth!

Thanks guys, good to be back!  :D

I got a Little Big Muff and it does that stuff fine, though i would suggest for that tone you use a guitar with a single coil and a very mid heavy amp e.g. Marshall or Laney.

This is a low setting fuzz into a dirty amp IMO, this way you dont get as much drag but do get the tone.

I also have a Marshal shredmaster, with the contour at the dark and fuzzy side and the highs boosted a bit you can get this kind of tone, but it will be hard to prefent it from sounding just like a very muddy kind of distortion.

Ive had a DUNLOP JHF1 J. HENDRIX FUZZ FACE some years back and it was pretty nice for a fuzz, i am not a big fuzz fan though.........

Thanks for the feedback guys! Listening to other recordings from that session, I think Henk is on the money - the amp is already pretty overdriven, with added effect on top.

Jt, jt jt jt, how goes it mate?? Are you well?

Myself, I am doing pretty well! Just got back from playing a gig in Middlesborough, which was fun. I went through a strange period when I realised that, basically, all happiness is created within yourself - so my endless searching for musical success to provide myself with happiness was fundamentally flawed. This kinda screwed my brain for a while, and I questioned whether I should really go 'all out' for the music or just let life happen and see what avenues it presents to myself.

However...happy to report that I figured it all out! Still sticking with the band...and loving it just releasing I will be happy with myself and my life regardless - very Zen! We've only been gigging for 8 months or so, and have had much good press:

'Beautifully fervent guitars and haunting vocals...a mesmerising stage presence very much their own.' NARC Magazine live review

'Top 10 songs of 2007' - BBC Newcastle

'Must see 2008' - BBC Newcastle

And yeah, I'm quoting from our press release, which is sitting right in front of me! We've been in the Fly, some magazines in Edinburgh and some other random stuff that I don't really notice...still don't own a radio and still don't pay much attention to the musical world!

You can find us at:

http://www.myspace.com/strangersinpolaroids

We're releasing our first demo EP on teh 29th Jan, then back in the studio 4 days later to start recording the new songs. And all the while, our newer songs keep getting more immediate and stuff...more epic and heavier and less less the first demo. I'm getting to exert my influence more!

Aims for 2008, basically get in the national media and play some more support slots and maybe a festival or two. We shall see how the year plays out!

PS mate, we are playing in April some dates down south. Oxford, Brighton, and maybe London. Would love to see you if you're about then! And you can shred my arse off....

I'm buzzing mate...blasting Led Zeppelin on the motorway home before!

Anyway, let me know how you are and I do hope you are keeping well!

:)

Nice myspace, like your style!

(i would remove the "influencing bands" paragraph, they are too many and it looks a bit amateurish to have that)

Hey don't you give up too  early on that pursuit for rockstar fame! Let's say if the result will be based 30% on luck and 70% on hard work, there is a factor you cannot influence.

So indeed it's a good idea not to get too hung up about something that you can only influence 70%. But if you give 130% on the 70% the chances go up so I wouldn't be too zen about it

Check out Devi Ever. They specialize in inexpensive (about $65) fuzz boxes. They have a butt load and they sound pretty good. I'm sure you can find one of a similar sound to that Radiohead clip. Check out the Karaoke Party sound clip. I think it sounds fairly similar.

Cheers guys! Appreciate the sentiment! (btw, I don't 'do' the myspace, but I will pass your design comments onto the band).

Yeah....PASSION. Hmm, as a 23 year old, there are so many distractions. The burden of 'career' breathing down your neck...fun times...women. Basically, the way I see it now is that, whatever I do - whatever my career may be or the woman I see, whatever - I AM a musician. Just because its something I do, its in my blood.

I think I used to have so much passion for music because I thought it was my only way out of unhappiness. But I am happy and at peace now. BUT...the passion is still there, it just burns in a different way. Whereas before it was like fireworks going off, now its like hot coals glowing.

I used to be very negative, and was scared that positive thinking would kill my creativity. I don't think it does, provided you process it in the right way.

Thing is, that stuff on the myspace is OLD now. Like, last summer...we just had a difficulty getting it out. The new stuff is MUCH better IMO...including this song we only have 16 bars of right now but I think its one of the best things we've done...

That's also how Stairway to Heaven started, so let it sink in and develop itself ... and then record and post it here

Actually if you dont want that to change it wont, regardless of making music as a pro or as an amateur, if your a musician your a musician.

The fuzz sounds like a fuzz face with single coils, IMO.
