Guitar advice and pickup choice?
« on: November 11, 2007, 08:57:39 PM »
Hi all,

This is my first post on BKP forum although I've been reading and listening to all the clips for the last few months.

A few months back I had gas for a new guitar and my searching has changed what type/style of guitar I want several times. Ive finally decided I now want that classic blues -> rock type sound.

I was blown away by the clips posted on here especially by Tom and Hunter who are like venus fly traps for BKPs. This whole post and rant has to fit a Mule/BD somewhere in my plans. I just love the sounds they make.

I was also really impressed by the sounds Tom and Hunter get from a PRS SE and LP Epi by using decent pickups. I went to the local shop and tried a PRS SE and really took to it but this shop happens to have about 30-40 US PRS in the same rack "drool".

I thought I would give one ago to compare and see what the extra grand or so for a std prs would make. OMG the standard 22 i tried was beautiful, especially the neck on the guitar!! It was a vintage mahogany colour which I think is just stunning. I think its better then alot of the fancy tops. (just as well, its the cheapest!) I really was taken by this guitar but didnt get a chance to try any others as I was not in a position to buy one!

Anyway, sorry for ranting on. I really want a guitar that is amazing and is very versatile. For all those on the "who has a PRS" post what would you recommend a singlecut or a std 22 (i want the vintage mahogany)? I havent had a chance to try a singlecut but I prefer my LP to my strat in the feel and the neck. Are the necks the same on the single cut and 22, its just the the weight of the body  that different? and are the wider fatter neck options like an LP?

I am after a guitar that can do a whole variety of sounds but am mainly after a 70's led zep sound -> gary moore -> santana -> bluebreakers type sound etc.

I was suprised how many of you in this forum and PRS's forum who have replaced the PRS pickups. considering how expensive they are they should be better.

What i'm trying to decide is; if i got a prs what type should I go for and what pickups? e.g prs singlecut + mules or BD/mule (and would this be a great combo for a variety of sounds and nail the sounds im after?) Do the BD and Mules sound good tapped. Not heard a clip of this?

I could put some mules in the LP below? I love the LP but It has hot pickups 500t etc and if I put the mules in there i'd have the sound im after but then no guitar to do the higher gain type sounds. Also the PRS is just stunning and more versatile and I have so much gas for it I think its worth the investment and saving.

P.s Tom, becareful spending your student loan on a guitar. I tried that and ended up buying the LP below lol, and then having to explain to my parents part way through the year I'd somehow run out of money. Beer is cheap at uni and the nights out are priceless. If you can get sounds like that atm I wouldnt worry.  :)

I'd recommend a set of Mules for that guitar.

I find them to be able to cover almost any style of music, even higher gain stuff if you have a suitable amp and/or pedals.

Tim at BKP is in an Ozzy Osbourne Tribute band and (among others) he uses an LP with a set of Mules in and they really do sound great and don't sound out of place or under-powered at all.

In my own LPs I have a set of Alnico IV Mules in my Gibson and a Black Dog/Riff Raff combo in my Gordon Smith Graduate 60 (LP clone).
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......

+ 1 on the Mules, particularly for the tone you're shooting for. They do sound pretty decent tapped, but on full power is where they really shine. I've got a set in an Epi LP, and the sounds you describe are all there. I'd guess they'd sound pretty good in a PRS of any sort too.

I'd try to get hold of a Patrick Eggle Berlin before forking out money on a PRS.  VERY similar, some prefer the PRS, some the Eggle, I'ma  little bias on the subject
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Good suggestion. I'd forgotten about those. Relatively rare is the only downside - I tried to find one about a year ago -  it would appear those who have them aren't all that keen on parting with them!

That's because they're the schnizzle (as Snoop would say).  I think they're a bit rarer on that side of the pond as they were made a few miles down the road from me in good old blighty.
