Pull off technique advise
« on: November 13, 2007, 07:52:01 PM »
When I am pulling off with fingers 4p3, 3p2, 2p1 on anything but the high E string, I hit the higher string, which doesn't help the sound of my pull offs.

Sorry for the awful explanation, is it understandable?

What should I do to make this better?

not part of a song, just a little exercise I guess. I am pulling off quite hard, to try and get a louder pull off.

In something like a 3-1 pull off, you can mute the higher string with your first finger - In something like a 3-0 pull off you can use whichever finger you're using to pull off to mute the string below.

Basically, as with all techniques on guitar, if you want to avoid the wrong strings from making sounds, then you need to use your fingers to mute them.

Hi

Its pretty much impossible to do this without hitting any other strings, you just need to work on muting absolutely everything you arn't playing. Its a pain in the ass but is really important when playing with distorsion, no unwanted string noise.
So mute all the low strings with your right palm and your left hand should be perpendicular to the neck and you will be muting all the higher strings with your index finger.

Hope that is of some help.

You should get a copy of Guitar Lore and do all of the exercises within it as both picking and hammer on/pull off exercises.

Ah well, it means that my technique is correct, and I just need to tighten it up a bit.

Thought I better check that there was no obvious thing I was doing wrong.

Thanks Muso, I have been getting the hand perpendicular, just find the little finger becomes less extreme in the pull off action. doesn't ring as well.

Thanks all  :D

as he said use part of the the left hand index finger to touch the string higher string

you can also use the edge of a pick against strings to mute them, I use this a lot on bending, but it has it's uses when you accidentally make string noise

rusty cooley uses his right hand middle and ring fingers (maybe pinky too) to mute higher strings when doing his legato (shame he does it so fast sounds like a laser gun) not sure how easy this is if you use the pinky to anchor yourself

if you ever have problems with wounds ringing I use the palm and sometimes parts of the edge of the thumb (at the moment I'm trying out using both at the same time with sweep picking to clean up my sweep technique a bit more)

ok that's probably too much information but I hope it helps, you or anyone else with string noise problems

its the ascending / descending legato 1 2 3 4, 4 3 2 1 fingers.

So don't really have one spare, I am fine with general legato. Just this seems to make me sound really sh!te!

I am now pulling off as hard as I can in the shortest amount of distance, to minimise hitting other strings. Just need to perfect it.

I read somewhere that RR always made his students to that up and down the neck, every fret every string, improves and sustains hand strength apparently. So I thought I would just give it a run through
