Abraxas Neck + Painkiller Bridge

How would this sound and pair in theory?

Already have a Cold Sweat Neck with Nailbomb Bridge combo (excellent combination) and I'm looking for another totally different combination. I don't want a calibrated set or a Miracle Man.

playing Original Tunes with traditional + modern metal fusion sounds (need versatility)

thanks  :)

Tim sent me an e-mail:

Hi Octavio,

the Abraxas neck seems to be gaining notoriety on the forum paired with some of the high gain bridges like Cold Sweat, Nailbomb and Painkiller. The AB neck isn't as hot as a Crawler neck although both are AIV powered.

kind regards,
Tim

Very interesting.  So looks like the specs have changed.  I feel a bit of a tw@t now, having said they're the same (but that was based on past comments).

Another example of why we "need" the site update!  Maybe, whilst the major site overhaul is pending, it would be possible to update just the basic specs on the product pages, and add the specs of the neck models?

I know the Emerald specs are out of date, for example.

or maybe to be lazy, a rather long forum post in 'news' for the updates.

Will the power of the two be ok together?

I think so. My Crawler set pairs a 15,6k bridge (same as PK, according to the specs) with a 7,6k neck, and I even have the bridge pretty close to the strings. I think a PK/Abraxas would work well. It will be an agressive combo that's for sure. Even though the Crawler neck is no longer the same as the Abraxas neck, I can't imagine there's a world of a difference in output.

I'd really like to see the updated site for the BKPs too. They really deserve it hehe.

My Crawler set pairs a 15,6k bridge (same as PK, according to the specs) with a 7,6k neck

My early 2006 Crawler set also has (according to Tim's email at the time) a DC 7.6K Alnico IV neck pup -- which, at the time, was also what Tim said he used in the Abraxas sets.  I don't know anything more about my bridge pup other than what the web site then claimed (and still does) for the Crawler, which is approximately DC 15k A5.

So does anyone actually know the details for the current Crawler and Abraxas neck pups?  So far we just know that they're different and the current Crawler is hotter than the current Abraxas ... but that's all! :P

Well, my Abraxas neck (bought in Aug '06) is 7.3K AIV, and my brand new Crawler neck is 7.8K AIV (the bridge is 15.5K).  Those are the specs from my warranty cards.

So, it looks like the Abraxas neck has about the same DC resistance as a Mule neck  .  But I'm pretty sure they're not the same - wonder what the differences there are?

I think the DC readings vary a lot within the same model. As it says on the site, they are approximate. My Mule neck (AIV 7 string) is 7,1K

So maybe the 3 (neck) pickups have pretty similar construction, but with a few extra turns for more output?

This is certainly true, and I haven't got a good understanding of how wide a variation one might expect to find between different example of the same model.

And, of course, I'm not sure how Tim's intentions regarding each model have changed except that it does seem like the Abraxas neck is intended as a hotter version of the Mule neck (though perhaps not a lot hotter) and the Crawler neck is (now, at least) intended as a slightly hotter and slightly more midrangy version of the Abraxas ...

... maybe! :)
