1959SLP Reissue by Marshall
« on: December 20, 2007, 09:56:54 AM »
Anyone got an experience with this amp?

Im not wanting it to be the holy grail of tone, as im sure that doesn't exist but if I buy this thing is it going to be reliable? will it do what it says on the tin? eg, rock n roll tones of yesteryear?

any arguements for getting a JCM800 over the 1959SLP?

Debate..

I'm sure you know this already, but the JCM800 will have a master volume control and more gain.  80s rock and metal in a box.

The 1959SLP is not a fully accurate replica of the old ones.  There are certain component values that are different and the quality of the components isn't as high.

It depends how much you want to spend and what tones you're after. as to which is best for you.  Both will sound Marshall-y but from quite different eras.

1959SLP - 'DC crunch, EVH if you push the front end with a pedal
JCM800 - Zakk Wylde, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake etc

yea I guess.. I kinda like both and intend on pushing either with an Alberta pedal by T-Rex (TS808 clone)..

I just really have no idea which I want, I like them both so much.. I've tried many JCM800s i know the terratory.. the 1959SLP is totally unknown to me.

Have you considered buying a clone or having one built?

For similar money to a new SLP you could have a Plexi with an added master volume.  Might suit you?

If you fancy an SLP, Sounds Great Music have a mint used one in priced at £649.  They've had it a while though, so you may be able to haggle  ;)

haha, James, you're a long-term GASaholic. There's no hope for you !

If you do decide to go for a 100W Superlead, there was an "as new" HANDWIRED Marshall 1959 head, that didn't go for the asking price of £799, on ebay yesterday - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Marshall-Handwired-1959-100-Watt-Head_W0QQitemZ140190411547QQihZ004QQcategoryZ10171QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem .  I'm guessing they still have it for sale. If it was me, I'd go handwired if I could.

Versatility?

You cant go wrong with either IMO, its a rock vs HARDrock issue, the JCM has never let me down EVER in the 12 years i have it, i even wouldnt be surpriced it still has the original tubes. The clean channel on my JCM800(arguably less full sounding) is not as nice as the 1987 (both 50w's) but then again i like the cleans on my Bluesbreaker better then the 1987. I personaly prefer a 50w marshall amp over a 100w one, i use greenbacks which dont work well with 100watters IMO.

Like always, i cant stress this enough, try to get a decent original one first, might cost a bit more but when i see my JCM800 has doubled if not tripled in value you know why i say this. Plus the fact offcourse that a well kept original will trash any reissued one. In terms of reliability i allways found the old players werent as prone to cranks and quirks then a new one, this again with a well kept amp, i think anyone buying an old marshall should calculate a good TLC on arrival.

I played one of those and while the clean channel is real nice, the drive is a bit too smooth/lame for your taste, trust me.

I would agree with the post above about trying to find an original 1959 Marshall.  I got my Superbass for the equivalent of £550 in a p/ex deal.

If you're already paying around £650 for a RI, you should get a mid 70s 1959 for that kind of price, maybe a wee bit more depending on the year and condition.

Actually, this is a fantastic deal on a RI 1959 and a 4x12 TV cab for £650 BIN... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MARSHALL-1959-SUPER-LEAD-PLEXI-100Watt-Head-4x12-Cab_W0QQitemZ110207348295QQihZ001QQcategoryZ10171QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
