scorpions @ wacken, krautrock, conny plank and other musings
« on: February 07, 2008, 06:35:48 PM »
i was listening to a bootleg of the scorpions 2k6 show at wacken. seems it was a great show - especially they really nailed the encore! was dissapointed that they only made a bad job of one song (don't believe her) which unfortunately is my favourite scorpions track. but i think the other tracks make up for it (in trance - OMG!), and maybe i'll put the dvd on my birthday list when the time comes.

i often forget how blackmore-ish uli is at times.

one of the tracks - searching for the peace of mind - i thought was particularly great. and after this i listened to the whole of 'The Lonesome Crow' - wow, really great Krautrock production! :) It just screams it was produced by Conny Plank of course.

I always forget how much I like Krautrock, and especially the production of Conny "phil spector of krautrock" Plank. Krautrock really influenced alot of music styles, and I must say its influenced me quite alot directly as well as indirectly.

something about these wild times in 70s germany made such great anarchic music, and i'm really tuned into the sound. improvisation with guitars and electronics, experimention and treatments of the sound. something like this would be called over indulgent today, and rightly so! but in the context of this kind of music is works really well.

conny plank's productions from this period are instantly recognisable of course. somehow he generates so much space, but there is room for a great deal of sonic depth and experimentation. i'm sure he had more involvement than just production, perhaps even helping to write with some of the musicans he produced... or maybe he just had a really good dealer  ;) anyway i say this because of the very sentimental and nostaligic feelings his rolling sort of 'sound' creates. progressive music i actually want to listen to!

i never had dreams to visit any sort of 'famous' studio (except maybe kling klang (kraftwerk) or earthbound (the prodigy)) before i listened to conny's stuff. i heard at a gig i played in berlin at the end of 2006 from a german tour manager, and big krautrock fan, that conny's studio was broken up earlier in 2006, which is somehow sad i think - espeically as i'd hoped to visit someday. that german tour manager was a really top guy, and i hope i run into him again actually.

my - what a random post that was!  8) here an example of what i mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nTGTCSGj30

You know I am German, loved the Scorps all my life, but did you know that these are German too? They were REALLY cool in 80s Germany ...

Accept seem to have made some pretty good stuff! Great tip - thanks ;)

Many of my favourite bands/musicians are German, you surely have a great music heritage!

And as for your first video - I will never get over my Flying V obsession with posing like that.

I too have a weakness for German bands - Scorps /Accept/Rammstein/Primal Fear/ Helloween/ Warlock & Doro

First saw Accept at Donnington 1984 and then again in 1986 with Dokken supporting (Russian Roulette/Under Lock and Key tour)

The Metal Heart clip has a nice out-take of a classical piece in it (but I cant think what it is right now - any clues??) - Wolf Hoffman was a good guitarist......

As far as the Scorpions are concerned - I first got into Tokyo Tapes and then had In Trance and Taken by Force and got into the whole vibe they had , although Uli was so into Jimi , it just shone out.

Upon reflection I much prefer the more polished sound they developed in the Lovedrive - Love at first sting era  (1980-84) but felt they got too slick after that - especially after Crazy World. Matthias Jabs is such a good guitarist - I love his stuff on Blackout album the best in many ways
The recent Humanity Hour album was brilliant though - very listenable!

I love this clip of them playing the 1983 US festival - just as they came on stage  a ton of pyo went off and the American equivalent of the Red Arrows (Blue Angels) flew across the stage at the same time- what a rush!
Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Triumph,Ozzy and Van Halen also plyed that day

Wolf Hoffman's solo in "Metal Heart" is adapted from "Für Elise" by Beethoven - he did a lot of classical quotes in his playing, and he's a sadly underrated metal guitarist in my book.

And Warlock were totally magic, too. :D

Big (fat) Scorpions fan here, as discussed many a time!  I like Accept too, but don't have many of their albums for some reason.
I was also very into Bonfire for a while, anyone remember them?

Never got into the Conny Plank stuff.  But on the subject of Krautrock, my ex-brother-in-law did once give me a couple of Amon Düül II albums.  I liked the cover art but the music was a bit beyond me!
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

What I could never get into was Doro Pesch / Warlock stuff, but well.

Accept and Scorps both rule definitely.

My fav Scorp song is a bit unusual maybe: coast to coast (have it in my jogging mix on the ipod, always lifts me up)

If Rudolf had tuned his guitar, this would have been a decent go at it:

Personally when I hear the term Krautrock I think of Can.

If you are a fan of such things I suggest looking for Julian Copes book "Krautrock Sampler", and head off to his website http://www.headheritage.co.uk/

His current book is Japrock Sampler (for fans of JPop as well as Jap Rock)

My sentiments exactly.  Humanity Hour One was a nice return to their great accomplishments. Accept was kickin too.
