Peavey 5150 tubes not Glowing
« on: December 31, 2007, 11:41:38 PM »
$%&#ing Hails Guys
how are yah?
long time i dont post here right?!
today, i was playing at home with my peavey 5150 head, and it suddenly turned OFF.
i was checking the No break, but it was OK
and then i realized that TH fuse was $%&#ed up
then i changed it
what do you think it could be the problem?
Plus.. i opened it´s back, and i was checking, None of the five PREAMP tubes ARE GLOWING.
but the distortion is still good.
i´m not sure if it is just my imagination but, two things took care of my attention
one of the preamp tubes was a ittle bit less tight than the rest, and maybe, MAYBE, the higsh are a little bit LESS proeminent.

doyou guys have any clue of whats going one with my amp?
the four POWER TUBES(SOVTEKS. ) aRE Glowing OK.
But, the 5 preamp tubes, Electro Harmonix, Aren´t glowing AT ALL.
are they supposed to GLOW or not?!
Hails and a late merry christmas, and a happy new years eve
JP

Yes, your preamp valves should glow.  When the HT fuse
blows it's a sign that one or more of the output valves are gone.

Remove the output valves, turn it on - do your preamp valves glow at all?  If not, take the amp to a tech.

.The output tubes are NOT the 5 pre-amp tubes;the output tubes are the (4) big ones, the power tubes.Heavierthanhell was suggesting to pull out the power tubes (when "off")and then, check the 5 little pre-amp tubes to see if they are glowing (when you are "on").If your fuse blows,it means you had a short-cut (it can be a power tube failure for ex.).Btw,the pre-amp tubes are normally covered (metal cover) so,if you want to see if they are glowing, you have to pull the metal cover out...They are not soldered. When the cover has been pulled out,it's easy to pull out the tube.I hope this  will be helpful.Good luck.

I think you just forgot to pull out the covers of the 5 pre-amp tubes..if it's the case,it's perfectly normal if you don't see them glowing. :) If one pre-amp tube is less tight,it's no problem either. :) Anyway, like i told you,if the fuse has blown,it means you had a short-cut.Be sure to replace the fuse with the exact same specs. Then, you should check the power tubes and ,probably, change them (at least the culprit..).

Sorry for the delay guys
i saw yoru posts
i was just sad with the new years thing
well, i turned the light off and i could see the little 5 tubes glowing. but they do not glow as strong as the 4 big tubes.
they are definitely glowing
should i still leave it in a tech?!
i´m using a no break that transforms the energy from 110(amps voltage) to 220.(brazilian voltage at my region)
what do you think?
are you sure that the amp will not explode if i pull OUT ALL 4 power tubes and turn the $%&#er ON?
Q:p

They don't glow very bright.

There's a reason many companies put LEDs on their amps pedal to light the tubes.

Still if the fuse blows something could be wrong in the amp and it should be the power tubes, not the preamp tubes.

On a 5150 BTW the preamp tubes are hidden inside the amp behind a small panel.

The preamp valves rarely glow as brightly as output valves - some NOS 12AX7s barely glow at all, my Sylvania 12AX7s are a good example.

If the amp is blowing the HT fuse, it'll be your output valves (6L6GCs in this case).

I promise you that running the amp without any output valves is 100% safe.  You still need it connected to a cab though so that the output transformer can 'see' a load.

Of course you won't hear anything with the output valves removed, but if the amp doesn't blow a fuse when you've puled them then you know it's a bad valve.

Personally, I'd put them back in one at a time to weed-out the bad one.  If two of them are still found to be ok you can just run the head at half the cab's impedance and use two rather than four valves (should have valves in the inside two positions or outside two - doesn;t matter).  Just don't put them both on one side, you'll not break anything but it won't sound very good.
