Just a quick question, which of the above has a higher output? i.e. what hits the preamp harder? I'm talking about the regular Alnico NB. Not really interested in the various tonal differences as I've already got that covered. Thanks!

81, by quite a bit. Maybe, completely subjectively, 25 or 30 % more.

How come, then, when I switch guitars between 81's (Well, actually EMG 707's), and my passive strat, there doesn't seem to be a volume difference really... Just curious. Thanks!

If you are usuing distortion it wont change the volume, just the gain. TRy that on a good clean channel, you'll see :)

Thanks everyone, the point is I actually want less gain but still retain a really aggressive rhythm tone

. The Nailbomb sounds like exactly like what I want but I wanted something with less output for better clarity and ease when recording. I find I have to run the preamp gain too low on my Engl (when using the EMG) to stop everything mushing up but it also means that the amp isn't really in its singing range. Lower output p'ups should mean I can turn the gain up a bit and let the amp breathe.

truth
but the miracle man sounded a lot clearer through my ex-recto than the holy diver, so i'd recommend ceramics for it
greenbacks instead of vintage 30's help a lot too, especially if you use a fronloaded cab
the greenbacks seems to focus and clean up the muddy mids and the frontloaded design helps to tighten up the loose bass

Lower gain aggressive rhythm = mids.
