Laney VC30 - new speaker?
« on: February 11, 2008, 04:10:34 PM »
Evening all.  Just bought myself a used Laney VC30 and it's sounding nice.
The person I bought it off has changed the speaker to an Eminence Legend speaker.
Now, I know I should be thankful it's not an HH Invader speaker, but I have no idea what model of Eminence Legend speaker it is, can't see anything to identify its model on it - It just says Eminence Legend.  This means I don't know what wattage it's rated at (the lowest wattage Legend speaker on the Eminence site is 50w).
I was just wondering what you guys thought of that as a speaker choice for the VC30?

I also noticed that watford valves has full upgrade kits for this amp:

http://www.watfordvalves.com/product_detail.asp?id=1463 and also this;
http://www.watfordvalves.com/product_detail.asp?id=1439
(one has a Celestion vintage 30 the other a G12H anniversary)

These seem pretty cool, anyone think these sets are a good idea or tried them out yourself?

I know that there are some speaker fiends on this board that can help point me in the right direction

I have a VC30 though mine is the 2 x 10 and has Jensons. Not that any of that is of any help to you. I have considered the upgrade kits but have never actually  gone for it as yet.

i haven't tried the legend, but just be careful you don't "upgrade" to something that's worse...

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to put a G12H anniversary in there.
From what I understand, you can't go wrong with them.
Was considering the heritage, but the soldering as well as the price put me off; I have no idea if they're worth the extra so for now I'll try a G12H anniversary.

Isn't a G12H a 30 watt speaker?  What is the output of the VC30 when you drive it?  The G12H does have a great sound (much better than the V30 IMHO), but I would be a little worried about overloading it.

The absolute perfect speaker for that amp is the Celestion Alnico Gold - 50w and all that classic alnico tone.  Watford Valves were knocking them out for £100 last time I looked.

Tell me about it, I bought it and then seen yours for sale.  Sorry man, I probably would have bought it as well, although the 2x12 may have been a bit too much for me.  Sorry mate!

It is a 30w, and I did read about amps driving a speaker more than the rated wattage, but 95% of this time, the amp will be in my room, not in a live scenario so not getting blasted by any means.  You think it'll still be ok?

So I take it that the alnico gold would be a better choice than the G12H?  Bear in mind that I won't be pushing this amp as hard as it should.

Be aware that the prices at Watford Valves don't include VAT.
That extra 17.5% has caught me out a few times when I thought I'd got a reasonable deal.
Which is the reason I now get my tubes from HotRox (& the fact that the Watford Valve packaging is inadequate).

For that amp, you absolutely should get an alnico Celestion.  I'm saying to get the Gold (50w) as it's currently the same price as the Blue (15w) and all reports are that the Gold is 99% as good.  With the Gold you get the option of cranking the hell out of the amp at gig volumes - you wouldn't want to do that with the Blue.

Of course, the G12H-30s are great speakers too and you'd be very happy I'm sure.  The alnicos just have a sweeter tone imo.
