Hi guys/girls

First post be nice!

The one sound I don't have is the classic gibson marshall combination. I used this to devastating effect in my bedroom when I was 15 (with a silver jubilee affair) but anyway.

However now I am (somewhat) older and wiser (joke)! I am on the trail to marshalling up again!

My goal is slash appetite tone. I could get pretty close with a dsl50 which was my last marshall and I thought it was a pretty good amp really.

However, GAS has caught me quite badly for the 1959rr and a nice big matching white cab. I would then have the amp power scaled for home use.

Now this gear will cost £1700 (ish) which is a lot and what I'm saying is this: I don't gig or have any time to do so anymore. I do love playing and do so regularly at home. What I'm after is the ultimate marshall for home use. The 1959 slp I had with power brake years ago was rubbish and I've heard such good things about power scaling that I have been pushed into this thought process. And also its white!

What do you reckon? will it work? or am I better buying a suhr badger or something else. It doesn't have to be a marshall but the tone has to be spot on. I can't describe it but listening to the various utube vids modified superlead is it but it has to be quiet (I have kids)

Slash used a Caswell era modded Plexi PA amp (I think it's in that order) from what I hear on that album so maybe a low wattage boutique Plexi?

I've thought about that - but most of the plexi clones sound too well......plexi which is not quite what I'm after. Its a smooth tone and I want the extra bite (the kind that you get from a 2203 but fuller sounding)

well, i think you will never get the EXACT tone.

reading Slash's autobiography even he states he could never re capture the tone of some of the original Appetite recordings.

what you should aim for is a fairly close tone, maybe hunter could comment on the Vintage Modern ability on the Slash tones.

I assume you must also have the SD Alnico II's as well and a tabacco burst LP?

I would've guessed a JCM800 or Vintage Modern would work, but they're all pretty loud. Of course I would suggest a Laney GH but I always do that :lol: I did get a nice tone using mine on this gnr cover I did a while ago :P The GH is also really loud so dont know if I'd recommend it, a hotplate didnt help things much either.

cornell do a 5-watt "plexi". i haven't tried it, but i have tried their other low watter, the romany plus, and it was really, really nice. i would assume (but could obviously be wrong) that the plexi is really nice too.

5 watts is probably still too loud for home use, but a lot more suited than 100 watts! Though i think it has a wattage selector too, for down to 1/2 watt, so might be a good idea actually.

would be worth looking into, at least (you'd want to try one, please don't take this as a recommendation!). it does run el84s instead of 34s, mind.

slash used an amp known as number 39
It was part f SIR studios hire stock and had been modified by Tim Caswell who did amp tech duties there at that time
It had an extra gain stage as well as a few tonal mods too

Tim Caswell is also known for his work with Soldano - making a midi preamp that had knobs that were moved by little motors when you changed patches
He now makes his own amp that he calls number 39

It says on the cover written by Slash with Anthony Bozza, so I guess when it says "written" it probably means "dictated" by Slash and written by Anthony Bozza, hehe. :lol:

There are quite a few "grown up" words I think Slash has never used in his life...its quite funny...

Yes your all right I'll never get exactly the tone its just what I'm aiming for really. I want to try a vintage modern as that might get me close for a lot less cash. I'm also going to try the cornell as it looks like a cool alternative.

I'm not a slash wannabee its just my personal opinion that that recording is the definition of marshall tone for me.

I will of course need a les paul - or maybe an sg but that will be part 2 of the 'quest'.
